ISL Engine Emissions
I had always thought that following the ISL 400 engine, the Cummins ISL-425 had the added DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). Then the ISL-450 became the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) engine around 2010 or so. I do not know if the latter was used in any Monacos.
Going thru the Monaco/HR brochures I see the Dynasty and Imperial had the ISL-400 in 2007; likewise for Camelot, Scepter, Diplomat & Endeavor. Then in 2008 the Dynasty/Imperial ISL engines were ISL-425. However the brochures and other online specs I see for the 2008 Camelot and Scepter still show as "ISL 400". I know the Dyn/Imp engines had the 2-stage engine brake while Cam/Sep/Dip/End ISL's were the exhaust brake versions.
Does this mean that Monaco had enough ISL400's thru the 2008 model year for all their RR10S and RR10R coaches? or did they leave the 400HP designation and still equip them with the DPF? Or is it a typo?

They used whatever was available. Brochures are sometimes a wish list. Once the Dpf only engines were gone they used the next generation. Once Monaco went under Navistar was totally unorganized . All they wanted was to install their non compliant pos engines. There are actually 3 builders of Monaco coaches. The original Monaco, Navistar and now Rev. Rev coaches are just another Fleetwood with a Monaco badge. Some are ok but nothing like a Roadmaster coach
Navistar are bastardised coaches using some Monaco parts and designs and some wierd stuff. The whole industry has changed.
Jayco builds Entegras that are nothing like the name. Someone makes Sportscoach that are just a rebadged entry level coach. If you have driven around Elkhart there are endless plants running at least 2 shifts a day building cheap garbage trailers and clrass mh's
The economy is going to change quickly and just like 2008 many of these companies will fold.

Monaco Coach Corp was famous for buying up pre-emssion engines in 2007 and using them in 2008 and newer coaches. Most of these have a note on the window sticker that says the engine is Pre-2008.
Unfortunately, Monaco filed Chapter 11 in Mar 2009. They were into 2010 model year production at this time.
I saw some of the warehouse pictures from 2009 and they showed rows of new engines and generators sitting on palettes.

We were at the factory in the fall of 08. They were in trouble already and many of the suppliers stopped shipping parts as their invoices were overdue. Hwh was one of them. We had some warranty work done at Guaranty RV and they had to get parts directly from HWH. The Roadmaster plant was not running and there were crates of parts everywhere. Very sad.

Any Cummins engine produced after January 1, 2007 had to be 2007 EPA compliant, the first year of the DOF (Diesel Particulate Filter.)
When I ordered my 2008 Camelot in April of 2007, I had a choice of an ISL400 (2006 engine) or an ISL425 (2007 engine.). I asked what was the difference and was told the the 2007 engine had the DPF. I went with the ISL400, as I didn’t want to be part of the learning curve on a new engine. And it was a learning experience for those with the new DPF, until Cummins was able to dial in the software. 2 years of regen issues that some folks had to endure.
So, when I told my salesman at Guaranty RV that I wanted the 2006 ISL400, he had to verify stock of such. At that time there were 3 left. That left 2 other 400 engines for others after me.
Any engines Monaco bought in 2007 from Cummins were 2007 EPA compliant with a DPF.

don't know if anyone is still following this thread but I'm curious if there is someone that knows how to tell which engine (as in pre 2007 vs. post 2007) has been installed in a RV from looking at the VIN number?

Not from the VIN. But every engine has a serial number and Cummins would have a record of the emission system. Besides if it is a post 07 engine it would have a DPF and not a muffler. There would be labels telling you to burn ULSD fuel if it was post 07.

I am just starting my search for my next DP and I'm trying to figure out a way to find a pre emission engine, because you obviously can't go by the model year. So the engine number would be the only real way of knowing?

If you open up the engine hatch and look down a post 07 engine will have a DPF. Much larger than a muffler. It will have wires and lines attached. The fuel fill area should have a label stating it needs ULSD. There should also be a label by the fuel gauge. Somewhere there should be an emission label but I do not know where. I would never let a DPF stop me from buying a vehicle. Our 08 Dynasty has a DPF and it performs flawlessly. Still on the original DPF and has never been cleaned. WE did have some software problems due to a Freightliner mechanic playing with parameters. But the fix was easy. There are far more important things to watch out for when buying a used motorhome. For instance certain ISL engines between 05 and 06 have wrist pin problems. Some ISX engines are true junk. So why worry about a DPF.

I do have several parameters that I'm using and the emissions is just one of them. I know enough having had a DP for many years to be able to tell if it has a DPF by looking but my search is starting out online and wanted to see if there was a way to tell without physically looking. I know its going to be next to impossible to find exactly what I want but at least I've got a couple years before I retire. If I found one with a DPF that ticked all the other boxes I'd have no problem going that direction. Thanks very much for your input.
