KLH In Motion Dome Conversion From Direct To Dish

I had an in motion KLH Sat installed in February 2005 and used Direct TV for a period of time since we had that Service at home(now use Comcast). I am considering the purchase of a Dish Receiver currently marketed by Camping World and using the Dish service in the MH only. I understand that a switch under the Dome has to be changed for this to work. I looked over some of the posts but didn't seen any mention of this procedure. Any one tried this? Thanks David.

I'm not familiar with KLH, but could you mean KVH?
I have converted a KVH R5SL from Direct to Dish. You'll need to update the firmware and purchase their proprietary plugs to configure. There's quite a bit more info in the Technology section.

Mutt, I looked into doing what you are thinking and found that my 2001 KVH system was no longer supported. So the dome is now worthless. It doesn't leak so I am not messing with it. For the past 5 years, I have used the Dish Tailgater and the 2211z Hd receiver with a stand alone hard drive for the recording features. Works flawlessly and is not always under a tree. It will work with up to 100 ft of RG6 coax cable. Set the box out pointed south and go inside the motorhome and click three times and it is all set up. Call Dish VR customer serv and give them your current zip code and you will get all local channels. It is great for checking the local weather report where ever you are.

David, Dish has made changes to their Satellites that has made some if not most all of the older dome systems obsolete. Chuck

Is it because they changed from the KU to KA, or is it actually in the software for the unit that causes the unit not to function?

KVH In Motion Dome Conversion From Direct To Dish

The Unit I have is the L3/S3 Version and is suppose to be software compatible as I recall. Of course if the software is not up dated I might not be able to reload/change it to recognize a compatible format for current transmissions of Sat Signals. Do you know what year model the RS 5 unit might be. I wonder how much it changed from the L3 model?

I had the same antenna except model 4. Took forever to lock on. I removed it and installed the new tailgater on the roof. Easy install after patching holes from the old system. Used the old antenna cable for the tailgater. Works great. As I have been a tailgater user for years, I use my old tailgater as a portable when blocked by trees at my site.

The only reason I have a roof mounted antenna is for road use while in transit with the grandkids etc. Otherwise I suppose I would use a portable unit. Trees are usually in the way while parked. Thanks for the feedback.

Have a KVH in-motion R5 but no-mas firmware upgrades from KVH. Been their done that with the prior upgrades & such. Ended up with a DISH and Winegard X2 & happy with the ability to look at east or western arc birds.
I keep it up on the roof & never had an issue yet.

Any KVH tech should have the firmware. Takes about 15 min to update. The plugs are actually called keys. For Dish, you leave the keys plugged into the port.

The KVH tech will have the firmware if it's supported (and you have a valid CC#)
Those keys you are referring to are simply jumpers. You can make your own jumpers if you wanted to use jumpers I assume.
Using KVH's software and a laptop running windows you can type the commands to default to Dish or DirecTV just need to know the proper commands.

Been thru all the firmware update hoops on the KVH R5, both front and back plugs. Works for a couple of months & then It would start giving me problems again.
