But make sure you turn off the pump and relieve the water pressure before doing this -- if you don't, not only will you get a blast of water in your face, but it may damage the valve.
If the check valve does need to be replaced, and it looks like that will be too much work, the cheap low-tech solution is to get a garden hose screw cap. I've seen them in both brass and plastic. Brass will last longer, but the plastic one will work just fine. Just make sure either type has a good washer on it.
