Leaky AquaHot

I recently discovered a persistent leak coming from underneath the coach directly in line with the AH. We determined it to be coolant rather than fresh water. I inspected the unit and noticed thru a very small opening what seemed to be a steady drip from the drain at the tank. It didn't seen to be enough of a drip to equate to the amount coming from underneath so we were doubtful that's all it was. I've heard the horror stories about how expensive these are to repair if the leak is internal, so I called a few local places to see about a repair. The soonest available date was Sept 30th and I needed to bring it in, they said the mobile guy wouldn't have the right tools on his truck. We live in the rig so waiting a month wasn't going to do. I'm mechanically inclined but getting lazy. The thought of working inside a storage bay didn't appeal to me but it didn't seem we had much choice. We contacted Roger Berke and purchased the parts and repair instructions. I also rented a few tools he had to make the job go as easy as possible. I completed the task yesterday and I think it took longer to clear out and replace the items in the bay than to fix the leak. A big thank you to Roger. His instructions and tools were spot on. The only deviation was that I didn't remove the burner unit. I was able to accomplish the repair with it in place. I probably could have bought the parts cheaper locally and cobbled together the tools he's improvised but it was nice not having to run around looking for them. Well worth a few bucks. So far there's no leak, I hope it stays that way. One world of caution, be prepared to catch about 12 gallons of coolant!

Did it turn out to be a fitting on the drain line?

It appears so, there is no evidence of dripping so far, time will tell. I broke the plastic fitting that screws into the tank during removal, so it's hard to tell where the leak was at. Rogers instructions warned about that happening but one of his special tools allowed removal of the remaining section stuck into the threads. It seems that many early ones were installed with plastic fittings while the latter used copper nipple. Even the later versions have a chance of leaks since after the copper nipple they go to PEX and a plastic valve. His replacement parts include copper pipe nipple and brass valve. It's been 24 hours now with no active drip and appears to be drying out on the concrete.

Awesome! Roger is a one of a kind tech and a real gentlemen. DIY is not my first choice either, however, like you, availability and quality of service sometimes leaves little choice.
