Lift Pump Question Again
i did my best to solve this without asking this questin for the hundredth time. I have read every old post I can find on the subject and can not get the answer i need. I have a 2007 monaco cayman xl 38 feet with a common rail 5.9 the engine is 06 vintage. I found the injection pump no problem and 95 % of info I get on line and on IRV2 keeps referencing the 5.9 in a dodge pickup that has put the lift pump in the fuel tank. i have followed the lines best I can from tank forward and still can not see lift pump and there is not a large enough hole in the fuel tank foe it to be in there so here we go again. If any one with a monaco like mine has any idea as to is location i will be forever indepted to to them.

Jimmyz, I have an 07 Neptune with 5.9 Cummins just like you. There is no lift pump in the tank or near the tank for that matter. My coach as of about 4 years ago has a pump at the tank to push the fuel. 4 years ago I installed a pressure gauge to see what pressure gauge I actually had. It scared me when I saw the pressure. I had about 3 psi at WOT and about 7 psi at idle. This was on a coach with about 25,000 miles.
After I saw those pressures I installed a Raptor pump made as a replacement for a Dodge truck. I now have about 22 psi at idle and about 14 psi at WOT.
If I can help any further or more questions just let me know. I'll be glad to help anyway that I can.

I am installing a Raptor in my 5.9 Cummins Adventurer next week. It mounts in the stock lift pump location on the engine and could not be a simpler install. It is a good idea to use a Bosch relay to supply power directly to the pump instead of through the factory ECU.
There is a good write up on Enginebasics.com that will walk you through the install.

Tom, yes I used a relay on my new lift pump to power it. I installed my new pump directly at the tank so it would push the fuel rather than having to pull it.
Sure makes me feel better knowing the injection pump has a steady flow of fuel to keep it cool. Hopefully it will last a long, long time.

Chad,
I'm interested in understanding why one would make this modification. Is there a symptom that I'm missing on my coach? In my nine years of ownership, I have had zero issues with the performance of my engine (although plenty of other issues!). As always, just want to learn from the master!
Thanks,
Ron

Thanks Ron, but I certainly don't claim to be a "master". In my research I found that Cummins recommends a minimum of 4 psi at the injector pump. At 25,000 miles mine had barely 4 psi at wide open throttle. That got me scared so I added the "booster" pump at the tank.
I've also read on here that some folks had injector pump problems because of the lift pump going out and not knowing it had. The only way to know is with the pressure gauge I've been told. However, I've heard someone say if the lift pump goes out it may set a code and turn on the CEL.
I guess my thoughts were I'd rather spend about a $100 on a gauge than risk a breakdown. Well then it snowballed and had to add the booster pump. Probably just me being worried about harming the $3000 injector pump. HTH

Has anyone installed a pump on a mechanical engine? A mechanic suggested that I add one, but haven't a clue where to start.

Others have reported that the Raptor pump works well. Give them a call and see which pump model is right for you.
Here is a link to the installation instructions - to give you an idea of what is involved. http://www.pureflowairdog.com/manuals/R2SBD348.pdf

Well thank you all for the info and I will be adding a better lift pump to my monaco and i am fairly familiar with what is out there for sale and will scan all the posts to pick the best one. But for now my problem is finding the one i have. I have looked from the tank forward. There is a section of the frame rail that is very hard to access and if i was monaco and wanted to really piss poeple off that is were i would put it. so once I find it I will locate it somewere easy to access. So If I could get a rough idea were to look it would help. I am sure they don't have any one place they use it goes in what ever place they decide that day. So if I could here some of the places you have found yours I could start there.

I don't know if the lift pump on a Monco is different than a lift pump on Cumins 5.9L in a pickup, but on the pickup it is located right above the starter (and just below the fuel filter housing. Is this different on your coach?
Here a YouTube video on changing the pump (on a Dodge truck 5.9L) and a photo of what the pump looks like.
