A LED version of a dash indicator lamp would put out enough light, The tail light bulbs are big time over kill.

Yes that is what I used is a single contact. Plenty bright. Now to change colors you could buy different bulbs or buy a replacement lens for a couple of buck and make a filter. I am going to experiment with that for fun.

I installed the off the shelf led from Monaco about three years ago and after reading these posts on lighted handles I fooled around with ours and it burned out so I made up a tri-color led that fades the colors in and out over 30 seconds. Other colors are created by the mixing of the 3 main colors. It worked out pretty well and I also learned alot about how light travels through Plexiglas.

You know BBL (Back before LED's) I made up a porch light for my Scamp, (I had a 13' Scamp) that consisted of a "Jelly Jar" type porch light (The kind you might well have on your house) a 12 volt plug and a half burned out head lamp lamp. (Halogin) this is as I recall a 36 watt lamp, not much power at all as Incandascent lamps are measured.
I won't go into the engineering details but I did get comments on how bright it was.
(Heck, that fixture, on a house, would take a 60 watter and not be as bright)

ok, I'm finally rolling on this today. Bought my led's at radio shack, along with some 680 ohm resisters.
Also going to order a smart light 1000 in black.
Gonna run the grab handle wires down from the new porch light so the motion sensor controls them both per this post I found by YC1:
Installed mine yesterday. Works great and really lights up the area. I extended the center pin wire down to the newly modified entry grab handle so it controls the light in there too. Then I changed the entry led to a color changing led. Really cool.
YC1, if you're out there, thanks, and also do you have any details as far as actually running that wire down thru the side of the bus? Was it the hot or the ground:

So i started by buying a couple of the bright white leds from radio shack, and some 680 ohm resisters. I also got some led holders that fit in 1/4" holes.
Started by soldering a resisater to the pos (long) lead on the led, followed by a red wire.
And then covered em with some shrink tubing.
The led holders snapped right into the holes in the brackets
I' gonna light it from both ends, then fish the wire up to the porch light. When i get my smart light 1000, it will light both the proch light and the handle whenever anyone wAlks near the coach.

Haha, well at radio shack, they did have led's with several connections, each in a different color, one of which was red.
So... While it gave me great pain, i drilled a couple 3/16's hoiles through the side of my coach for the wires.
The wires came out in the pass armrest, right by the switch.
