Low Voltage at Campground Question

Hi We are camping in Vermont. We could only get a site with 30 amp. We can get by with 30 amp if we are careful with what we use at the same. When we are pulling approx 20 amps the voltage drops below the cut off on our Progressive surge protector ( I think about 102 volts) We are not using our A/C or heat pumps just our water heater, fridge, tv lights and small ceramic heater. I know the low voltage is hard on the a/c units. Will it hurt the fridge tvs or anything else. Thanks

Both low voltage and high voltage are detrimental on appliances with motors. Regarding ones with electronics I don't know. But I would recommend not using the power when either condition is present.

I have a PowerMaster VC-50 voltage booster wired before my Progressive Industries HW50C unit. I have never been shut down from low voltage. however, I am at a park where I had to unplug the VC-50 because the park voltage is normally around 127-128 VAC and the VC-50 takes it close to the top cut-off point of 132.

It can. Low voltage translates into high amperage and that causes issues. TV DVD.... most of the time will just not work but it can also cause issues.

Can be bad connections from their tap at the grid, anywhere to your, and including your plug. CG receptacles are a common point of problems.

Low voltage will not effect your water heater as it is a resistive load. You will just get less heat. As for motors, the low voltage is a bad thing.

A few things you can do to help the voltage situation in your rig is top run the water heater off of propane. If you have an absorption RV frig, let ti run on propane.

having low voltage problems this time of year would indicate that they have some issues and they need to start checking connections or bad transformers.

Thanks to all for the replys. We were able to move to a 50amp site. It has 115 to 120 volts with all loads. I feel much better now.

Glad you were able to switch sites and now have 50 amps with normal power.

I happen to be at Valencia Travel Village in one of their "temp" sites. The voltage in this area is really high so the first thing I had to do was to unplug my PowerMaster VC-50. However, the voltage stills gets over 132 during some of the nights which trips my Progressive Industries EMS unit. So now when that happens I turn the electric off and run on my inverter. It's hard to sleep when the PI EMS unit is clicking on and off all night as it is installed in the beneath the floor of the closet.

I will now remember to NEVER stay at any of the K sites when visiting this park.

The office stated that they had installed a step-up transformer for this area but they went too far.
