All, I have also done the service work on my coaches in the past, on our third now, but am getting increasingly nervous about crawling under the coach without some sort of support. What do you use? On my previous coach with hydraulic leveling jacks I would use them to raise the coach and try to stay in a position that if they released I would not be mashed. Our current coach has air leveling so I am not brave enough to raise it and then crawl under it. Do any of you use support jacks or any other method of raising the coach to get under and service? If you do use support jacks, where do you place them. We have an RR10S chassis.

Lube/Fuel Filters

LewF -- I did my own service on previous MH`s until we got a 42' Camelot with air leveling -- With the tag, it`s a real chore to grease the u-joints & slack adjusters -- I stopped by Speedco on our return trip home, & had them do the service -- Total cost was about the same as buying the oil & filters myself -- So, that is the way I`m doing it from now on -- William Willard

I was not about to crawl under their with the bags filled. I used composite decking material (flat boards) to drive the coach up on, which raised it enough that when I deflated the bags, I could still get under with a creeper. Under all wheels, I had about 4", which was enough. I did not trust jack stands either. I did block the wheels just to be a bit safer.

Speedco has a new price for medium size (under 30qt) service $149 plus tax in AL. Includes two filters, about $12 for the third one, $10 extra for Fleetguard. Out the door $174 in under an hour. AND tthey let you walk the pit to check under coach yourself. I think gen set was another $30 for 6qt, but I had just done mine. Clean shop, good help.

I scheduled an appointment with the Knoxville Speedco for this Thursday. Will report on the experience. They said that chassis lube and engine oil change was around $175.00. Sounds pretty good to me. Also getting Cummins campaign #0953 done at the same time at a Freightliner dealer located nearby.

Ok, stupid question (I'm new to motorhomes). This big monster holds a lot of oil what do you drain it in, or do you use one of the electric pumps to get the oil out???

Hey There!

I had a fumoto valve put in my oil pan last oil change. With that much oil, I wanted to be able to control the flow. I used 15 quart oil change resoviors. Filled one, shut off the valve, move the empty one in place and complete. Not a drop spilled!

This was the first oil change on my rig that I have done myself.

Thanks I would like to do my own work but there seems to be more to this than normal cars and pickups. Now you guys got me worried about crawling under this thing. I have the standard leveling jacks on a 2005 Diplomat, they are manual leveling and I don't believe they are air. So with these down and the coach shut down is it safe to crawl under??

Using the leveling jacks is no different than using a standard hydraulic jack. I would not do it without adding some jack stands in case something leaks down.

It was, I will admit, intimidating at first. If you take the proper precautions, it is perfectly safe.

As I stated in a couple of posts above, I cut deck planking from composite decking - the 1 foot wide ones in various lengths, 4 foot, 3, foot, etc and stacked them behind the wheels in a staggered fashion (like ramps). For the front wheels, I put two boards side by side so I had a wide platform. For the rear wheels, I went 3 stacks wide so that the dually wheels were well supported. Using 3 or 4 layers I was able to raise the coach off the driveway sufficiently that I could crawl under there with relative ease.

I did put the jacks down, just till they touched the driveway. This of course with the air dumped out of the bags.

Don't forget to block the wheels.

Since I used my 150 psi compressor to run my air powered lube/grease gun, the only time I jumped out of my skin was when the compressor went off!

I guess boards are cheeper than jack stands that will hold up 30,000 lbs. So let me extrapolate a little. Our plan is to full time starting around April. Do I save any money doing this myself? Fulltimers would have to carry all this stuff around with them to be able to work on the coach, do I want to do that or am I better off finding a good shop to do the work? I noticed quite a few posts on prices at shops so I'm guessing its 50/50 on maintenance done yourself or in the shop. What are your thoughts???

If I were lucky enough to be in your shoes. I would find a good shop!

Gordon, I've got a good buddy in Michigan that retired from the Coast Guard and is now in the Army Reserve. His name is Terry Geer.
