I know on my old 12 volt maintenance free interstate batteries you could actually remove the caps and fill with water. The new ones seem to not be that way, Has anyone been able to figure out how to remove the caps and refill these? Thanks in advance

Well my 5 year old ones had a label you had to partially remove and then pop the cover. I have since replaced them and not looked closely, but I think the new ones are the same. check out the pictures.

Mine were the same. The mfgr main label had to be removed then the caps were exposed. "Maintenance Free" my tail!

On a lot of the batteries like the ones Rex displayed above, you could see the outline of the caps through the label. Being an anal twit, I sliced the lavels with a razor and then removed the caps, leaving the labels intact.

Rex, Those look like my old ones and I was able to cut around the label and remove the caps. These new batteries have what appears to be individual round covers on each fill but they don't want to pry off. Will try to get a picture and post what I am talking about. Hoping someone from Monaco group that goes to Quartzsite will be able to help me figure it out when I am there.

The consensus from the resident Quartzite experts( Chief Dave and Drifter) was as I thought. The new 12 volt interstate batteries I purchased are sealed maintenance free, so the caps are not removable.

By definition you never need to add water to a maintenance free. This is because the "maintenance" they are free of is the adding of distilled water in case you wonder (You still need to clean them)

Thus the caps are locking, put 'em on once, they are not designed to ever come off this side of a recycling facility.

My last interstate 12 volts said maintenance free on them but just like in Rex's post you could cut around the label and remove the caps to fill the battery. So you can add water to some maintenance free batteries. Not so with the new sealed maintenance free ones. Maintenance free ones do not seem to last as long as their warantee out here in the desert southwest. Wish now I would have requested one that could be filled, if they even make them nowadays.
