Michelin 295/80r22.5 vs 315/80r22.5

We have a 2009 40' Camelot that came new with the problem goodyear G670RV tires. At 26,000 miles the front tires need to be replaced due to the unusual wear paterns many others have reported on (alignment etc. is ok). Th rear dual have plenty of treat and are wearing fine. I would liketo replace the fronts with Michlins in spite of the cost (about $1750 for 2 mounted and balanced!!!!). Can I put the 315 Michlins on to get more load carryng capacity, safety, and run a lower tire pressure? Are there any disadvantages? The additional costs pales in comparison with the cost of the tires. No wonder independant truckers are parking their rigs. Thanks in advance.

You state you have GY 670's, but not the tire diameter. If yiou have clearance for the 315's why not? I have GY 275 x 22.5 and wuld love to go to a larger tire, but with a 55 degree wheel cut the tire will rub. Go online and check the tire diameters. On the mich site they give you all those specs. 1700 bucks for 2 tires seems high to me. Check out the Michlien Advantage program for prices. FMCA also has jumped on this program. I found it easier to just to check out local Mich dealers for price. ed

No way should two Michelin tires cost $1750.00...I bought two tires last year (295x80Rx22.5) and they cost $567 each which included FET tax. I then paid to have the tires mounted and balanced (about another $100.00)....

Math time: Here is how to figure the height for any tire:
295/80R22.5
295 divided by 25.4(mm to inch)=11.6" which is your tread width.
11.6 times .80(aspect ratio for side wall height)=9.29
Take the side wall height times two (top and bottom) and add the rims size to get the overall 'unloaded' height of the tire, which for this tire would be 41.0"
315/80R22.5
315 divided by 25.4=12.4
12.4 times .80=9.92
9.92 times 2, plus 22.5=42.3"

Do you have the room for a tire that is about 3/4" wider and 1.3" taller? Not sure if this helps but......

I put Michelin 315/80R22.5 XZA2 Energy tires on my fronts, I have a 2006
Beaver. They cost $643 each on the FMCA deal. Now I have the S-Series chassis which is slightly different than the Camelot, so first turn it hard right and look at your clearances, then turn it hard left.

The 315s are a 21 ply tire. I like having the extra plies on my steering tires.

This subject has been discussed ad nauseum on the Monacoer's forum. Here is the "Reader's Digest" version. Some owners have installed the 315's in place of the 295's.. Most have been on Sig's and Dynasty's. I think all were tag axle models. Apparently although these chassis were all supposed to be the same some owners could not use the 315's due to interference with the air bag mounting plate. The conclusion was that different floor plans had some slight difference in the location of that plate. In a tight turn the tires would rub. In your case I would question the need for a larger tire. Your Camelot is not a tag model nor is it super heavy like the Sig's. These is no additional safety factor in having a tire that is that far beyond the capacity of your FA, I would suggest that before exploring your idea you weigh the front axle and see how much tire is actually required. You may be surprised. BTW: For some reason the 315's are about $50 cheaper than the 295's. The 315 will be OK on your rims BUT the weight capacity is reduced according to Michelin so some of the advantage in running the large tire is diminished. The only way to know if the larger tires would work is a trial fit. I will aLso agree with others that the prices you were quoted are extremely high. BUT tire prices have increased twice in the last 12 months.

I use 315's on the front and 295's on the back. I dropped my front tire pressures from 115 to 105. The good thing about the 315's is that they are 20 ply vice the 16 ply of the 295's. I actually measured 1.0" difference in diameter which is .5 difference in ride height and clearance because you have to half that. Moisheh brings out a valid point on fit with the air bag mount because even some "S" chassis have a problem with that. The reason I switched to the 315's was that my front tire loading was very close to the max and it made me uncomfortable but I am sure there is a big fudge factor on specified loading so you can run at the advertised max without a problem.

Mike did you adjust the ride height because of the additional 1/2" or did you leave it. Curious if it was necessary.

I lowered the front a quarter of an inch and thinking about raising the back a quarter inch or may just drop the front another quarter. Haven't decided yet

2008 Camelot 42PDQ with 315 Michelin on the front and love them. Made huge diff over GY. Just replaced duals with 295 Michelins not as big a diff as front but can tell noise & ride are better. Only 2 more (tag) to go and done with tires for a while!

Mike: I totally understand why with your sig the 315's were a wise choice but stuckysb has a Camelot. Are they usually at close to the weight limit of the 295's? Does not make sense.
