Stopped by a dealer to look at a 2012 Knight 36PFT. The unit looks real nice and has most everything we're looking for. The salesman was explaining the non-DEF usage of the Maxxforce 10 and how its gets great mileage. On a recent 500 mile trip this unit average 9.7 mpg.
Any thoughts?

And the unit was probably empty. 8, 9.7, 7, 6 when your driving these things the last thing to worry about is the fuel mileage.

I would consider a 2012 unit with 500 miles to be "used".

Now that the coach is available for less money because it's used, or a demonstrator at best, I'm sure they wouldn't mind letting you put another 500 miles on it to check the fuel mileage ????

Hmmmm.... How do you suppose they get the coach from the factory to the dealership?

I don't know about the fuel economy but my new coach had 2200 miles on it... which I believe is just about the distance from Forrest City, Iowa to Sacramento, California where I bought it. Isn't having this kind of delivery and test drive mileage standard?

This statement:
"On a recent 500 mile trip this unit average 9.7 mpg."
doesn't sound like a delivery to me.

We just got our new Knight. It was driven from Oregon and had about 3100 miles on it when we got it. They drove it over through snow storms, and I guess from what they said, it took a lot of cleaning to get it to the new look again.

The rig was empty when they went on their little trip. Again, the rig looks promising.
Thanks.

So do you know if the 500 miles was delivery mileage, or maybe to an RV show, or did the Sales Manager take a vacation in it?
I the end it probably doesn't matter. If the coach has never been titled and the warranty doesn't start until you purchase it, a certain number of miles is to be expected.

Our DSDP had over 2,200 miles on it when delivered to us, all of it due to driving from IN to WA.
Unless it's been titled before most states consider it to be new, once it's titled than it's a used vehicle.

Mr D has it right. MHs are not transported from the factory to the sale site by rail or truck; they are driven. Besides, the warranty period doesn't start until you ink the contract. If you like the unit buy it.

New engines, DEF or not, may just get better mileage. Each engine manufacturer has been working on improvement. Many folks were leery about the DEF engines. I was not one of them. I really like my new DEF Cummins ISB 340 hp engine and I get between 9 and 10 mpg depending on the terrain.
I like Monaco coaches but stayed away from the new ones because of the Navistar engine. My last coach was a class C on an International chassis and I had problems with injectors and glow plugs. It could have just been that engine but I did not want to go through that again. Being down for a week on the road and living in a hotel while International repaired my coach was just no fun.
To the original poster, 9.7 mpg just might be attainable with the new technology engines.
