Mileage?

I am curious what kind of mileage should we be expecting. That and how to get better gas mileage? We are currently getting somewhere around 6 miles to the gallon. We have a Monaco 2011 riptide.

Not sure what chasis or engine you have but 6 mpg sounds low to me. Speed too fast , weight, too much, tire pressure not enough, engine tune, driving habits, wind, hills, towing or not, all have an effect on mileage----optimize all those and you should see an increase in mpg.

I stay between 60 and 65 mpg, I travel fully loaded and tow, I drive frequently in the mountains, my tires are always inflated correctly, and I maintain my rig in good condition and get 7.5 mpg consistently on average----I keep records when I refill. I have has as high as 9.2 and as low as 5---once for each-----depending on conditions on any given run between tanks.

I'm currently in a testing phase with my, new to me, Beaver Marquis. In the past, my normal driving speed has been 60 mph in cruise control. I've dropped to 55 mph and my milage has increased from around 7.2 mpg to 8.5 mpg. That is significant in the long run. I am checking the milage by keeping records on gallons added and miles traveled. Also, have a Silver Leaf which coincides with the manual method.

Jim: If I were to drive my coach 55 mph it would never get into 6th gear. I got 7.61 mpg last trip out which was a 1,000 miles to Oregon and back running the AC and averaging about 65 mph. Only have about 6,000 miles on the coach so looking for the number to improve with more mileage. I believe I would get 8 mpg now if I didn't run the AC.

36' 1989 Foretravel with 8.2 diesel. I get 9MPG pulling our Geo Tracker and 10.6MPG without a tow the last time we were on the road. Different temps, less stop and go, more constant speed, tailwind or head wind, hills or plains, all have an effect.

The torque on my 425 HP Cat C12 peaks at about 1200 rpm which is the most economical engine speed. At 55 mph I run at about 1250 RPM in 6th gear. The determining factor is the drive train. The gearing in your transmission and differential dictates what gear you are in at what engine RPM. Go to your appropriate engine sales facility, with your engine serial number, and they will be able to give you a lot of info on your specific engine. Hopefully, your at peak torque when the transmission shifts into 6th gear.

I get about 8.5 mpg with my 40' MH towing a Ford Explorer on the West coast.

Tom,

I believe the Riptide is powered by a Ford V10 gasoline engine. There are so many variables that affect fuel mileage it is a hard question to answer. Most of the folks responding to your question have diesel pusher motorhomes so there numbers would not be a fair comparison. I would suggest you ask other Riptide owners to respond that have a like coach as you. Six miles per gallon does seem a little low but may be in the normal range for 20,000 lbs, at 70MPH with a lot of square inches pushing the wind. I know a Ford F350 with the V10 does not get much better than 10 MPG even unloaded. A lot of that has to do with the gearing.

Last Monday I got incredible mileage...-went about 40 miles without using a drop of fuel. That can happen when the entire coach is on a flatbed trailer!

Usually, if driving 55-60 mph, pulling a Chevy Z-71, I get 8.2 to 8.6 mpg. If I increase to 65, it drops to 7.8 and gets a little worse the faster I go.

We had a Fleetwood 34ft Class C gasoline V-10 Ford engine before this coach, and it got abysmal mileage even when not towing anything.

I have a 1999 Pace Arrow. 35 ft. F53 V10. On a 5000 mile trip out west in2008, I averaged 8.33mpg. The next year in 09 i drove 6500 miles same route and got8,32 mpg.

2002 HR Endeavor, 40DST, 330 Cummins, with 103,000 miles. I normally avg 8-8.4 at 70-72mph. Some days it's higher and some days its lower. Most of the time it all depends on how you fill your fuel tank, level or on an angle. My opinion is your driving a brick or barn down the road. The mileage will be what it is. Drive it and have fun.

There is almost nothing cost effective, other than slowing down, one can do to increase MPG. The difference between 7 MPG and 8 mpg is approx. $360 based on 5000 miles per year and $4.00 fuel

Everyone here has given you good advise, as far as I can tell. I slowed down a bit, i.e. instead of running with the cars on the Interstates I stay around 60 to 62 mph and so get about 10.3 towing my dingy. Granted everyone isn't going to get 10 + mpg, some less, some perhaps more (but not much). If you can wait an extra hour or two to see someone or a day extra on the road you can save and they say getting there is half the fun, gotta say on that one it only depends on whether you like driving in sometimes what may seem like bumper to bumper traffic. A way around that is to let your wife or girlfriend drive while you read a book in the rear so you can see what she's doing -- couldn't resist putting that one in . Anyway, watch your speed and leave home a bit earlier so you don't have to rush. You've got a big enough fuel tank so pick places that sell diesel at slightly cheaper, i.e. Flying j (also use their RV Driver Card as it'll save you about $0.03 a gallon on diesel. Don't laugh, it mounts up! Put all that the guys have advised and you together and you should notice a positive difference in mileage.

Good luck....
