This has been done for many years with older or non-sealed batteries: thermoil battery website. Newer batteries using vapor recovery cell caps, or sealed, do not benifit from a covering of oil on the electrolyte solution.

SuperMex - I put mineral oil in my house batteries a year ago, & the water is still at the same level, & I live in AZ. so they get the heat -- I got the oil at Wal-Mart for a couple buck`s -- Bill Willard

Regarding Thermoil as mentioned previously, when I bought my '98 coach I discovered the house batteries were made by Thermoil. I had never heard of them. So, I found their website and read their claims.

Well, those batteries were installed in April of 1998. I finally replaced them in December, 2006. I could have kept them longer if I didn't dry camp in Wal Marts overnight.

Eight years after installation all the cables looked brand new. There no signs of any corrosion anywhere.

They no longer make batteries but do make and sell the Thermoil. I guess that mineral oil is very similar.
