Robin:

Thank you for the answers to my questions. I suspected that Monaco does not really get involved. There is even a disclaimer to that effect on the Monaco website. At least if you buy it through a Monaco dealer the monies will be sent to the carrier. Many of the other online outfits pocket the $. What scares me about RVProtection is the lack of real information: Why do they not have all of the policies on line so you could examine each one? Why do they not mention the names of the insurance company and the reinsurer?

On our first motorhome, we bought the plan from Lazy Days. Our A/C went bad and another dealer replaced the unit, but did not replace the gasket around the bottom. Well it leaked and I had to have it replaced. The "adjuster" on the phone denied the claim said only gaskets were covered and they used a seal under my A/C. The package listed the item as a gasket. No recourse.

The point. If you buy the policy there may be no review by your state insurance department, since it crosses state lines, so you are flying by the seat of your pants on the warr. Further, the people who handle the claims are not lic insurance adjusters, so there are no ethics involved, usuall the State ins dept also will not get involved. Your only recourse is the courts. Not worth it in most cases.

IMHO, they know it would cost more in most cases to hire a lawyer and take them to court than the cost of the repair, so if they feel like it they just deny the claim. So again IMHO, save yourself some agony and take the several thousands of dollars and invest in a MoneyMarket fund (Use a ROTH IRA. You can get the monty you put in without taxes or penalty even if you are under 59 1/2) and use it if you have to. No one to deny your claim. That being said, I did have an ext policy on my 1998 Malibu and they did pay for the replacement of my alternator. But two MHs later and several auto since, I have not purchased an ext warr. s/Toby

I can tell you that Sacs and I met the liason who is employed by Monaco to work between Prizm, the coach owner and the shop. It did sound as if he has done some good for people and I believe someone was there sitting in that had been helped by him in the past.
With all of that being said...I can also tell you that we have not have any dealings with any of these companies...

I did some searching for information on RVProtection.net. He is described by many as a snake!! I know he is just a sales agent but he is also very scary. I have asked monaco to explain their relationship with Prizm and if they intervene. I will report my findings. There are very few extended warranty (actually insurance) companies that are ethical or even honest. The internet and RV magazines are full of horror stories. I have to wonder if Monaco got involved to help owners or create a profit center for them and their dealers. They are a business and I would hope they make profits or the whole thing would collapse. But the customer has to receive value for his $$. Extended warranties are appealing but I'm still not sure they are worth it.

My coach is just recently out of warranty and I needed a new front leveler jack last week. I called Prizm. The fellow was very nice and said that I shouldn't have to worry about it because Powergear covers the jacks for two years. But he also said don't worry, if there's a problem we'll take care of it. He was right, though. Powergear sent a new jack and paid for installation under their warranty.

I emailed both Monaco Extended Care and RV Protection.net. Monaco replied that they DO get involved. If it is not coverd they will tell you right away that you do not have a claim. But if it is covered and coverage has been denied they will contact the carrier and get you covered. Yes the policies are essentially the same. RV protection.net has not answered my email and I suspect that this type of sleeze will never reply. I think that when my factory warranty is expiring I will go with the Monaco package.

For what it's worth, if you called me a "snake" and a "sleaze" in public, based not on any personal experience of your own, but based on what you have seen others repeat in RV forums, I don't think I'd answer an email message from you either.

Again, based on my personal experience with Scott Stevens, I would have to say that he spent considerable time answering my questions and sold me exactly what I wanted to buy, after reviewing three different plans with me. And he saved me over a thousand dollars. Before buying, I checked him out with the sales manager for Prizm, the company who administers Monaco's plan, and they had no problem with Scott.

That said, anyone who has serious concerns about buying an extended warranty policy on the Internet, should probably not buy one that way.

Under the Wire

Before proceeding with RVProtection.net and Prizm, I checked the BBB and Colorado's Division of Insurance Complaint Reports.

Finding that it was safe to proceed, I called Prizm Sales and confirmed that they must have the executed contract in hand from the dealer 30 days and 1,000 miles before my 12mo/12,000mi new coach warranty expired in order to come in under the New Coach Warranty. If the contract is received late, additional fees have to be added to extend the new coach warranty.

In addition, I can only assume (bad on me) that dealers get hit with an admin fee every time they make a submission to Prizm because they batch their contracts and send them in only once a month. So that's another 30 days. Even though my 12 months will end on 31 July, the dealer would have to batch it with the May contracts that are sent to Prizm in June to meet my June 30th deadline.

Today Scott Stevens, President of RVProtection.net, has agreed to ship me the contract second day air to approve, sign, and return second day air in order to be included in the May batch that he will ship to Prizm in early June.

I found dealing with both Prizm and Scott Stevens to be professional and very amenable due to my inadvertent procrastination thinking I had plenty of time.

If you want to extend your New Coach Warranty, then you need to take action 3 months and 1,000 miles before your 12mo/12,000mi warranty expires.

Many thanks to Robin_M for his insight and guidance for helping get in Under the Wire.

We have a Monaco Extended Care Warranty administered by Prism on our 2006 Alpine Coach, that we purchased when we bought the coach new.

We recently had a radiator replacement that came to around $3000 and the extended warranty from Monaco paid for it, less our deductible, even though our manufacturer had gone out of business.

So we are pleased with Monaco's extended warranty on our Alpine coach.

OldForester,

I'm thinking that as extended warranty plan administrators go, Prizm is probably one of the better ones. That's probably one of the reasons that Monaco picked them for the plan that they attached their own name to. I'm impressed with Prizm as well, judging by the limited dealings I've had with them so far.
