Monaco isn't the only one with "badge engineering" in the RV industry. Look at the Winnebago/Itasca twins too. I can't imagine that is working out well for Winnebago Industries either. A lot of the duplication was to increase the dealer base in a certain region. The factories couldn't very well have 2 or 3 dealerships selling the same product within 150 miles of each other.
I think the selection will narrow like everyone else thinks. A major development will likely be the thinning of the dealer base. You will still be able to choose the manufacturer/model that you want, but the dealer may be 500-600 miles away. Local service will wind up being a third party affair from an outside source, unless you are lucky enough to live near your dealer. (IMHO)

Hi All,
In my previous post, I forgot to mention something about Safari. When Monaco bought out Safari, there was a stipulation in the contract that they still had to put Caterpillar diesel engines in the Safari brand diesel motorhomes.

Now, having said that; I learned something from the Caterpillar seminar speaker at the Western FMCA rally in Indio, CA. in January. Purely due to economics, Caterpillar will no longer produce CAT brand engines. They are going in with International Harvester and will start putting in IH's engines. They will happily still sell CAT engine parts and do the work on them. They still have CAT brand engines in stock and are using them up.

Soooooo....does this mean that Monaco will no longer build the Safari branded diesel motorhomes or,... is there another stipulation in the buyout contract that states, "if Caterpillar stops building the CAT brand engines, that Monaco can now use Cummings engines"? With my humble apologies, I know that this is kind of, but not quite This may actually help Monaco with one of their economic issues.

Tom

Hi All,
I need to clarify something on my last post. Caterpiller is only stopping production of their HIGHWAY engines. I mispoke on the Caterpiller Forum and that subject is now closed.

Seems to me that if Caterpillar no longer produces engines for the RV market then Monaco has an out on the Safari contract. My guess is considering the present market they will drop diesel versions of the Safari except for the Simba which already has a Cummins (FRED).

I agree with those about brand consolidation being a necessary move.

Roadmaster will become a Navistar company, maybe absorbed by Workhorse
That would be great!!! Then I would be eligible to rejoin the Workhorse Chassis Motorhome Club. Awesome group of folks.
