Monaco Knight vs Tiffin Phaeton

Current have an Allegro gasser on WH chassis that has been great. Getting the DP bug but need to stay in used price range. Have started looking at 2007/2008, 36' Phaetons but ran across a 2005, Monaco Knight 36PRT. It is out of state so just doing research. For those that are informed on differences between these coaches, is the Knight equivalent to the Phaeton. How about engine and chassis differences. Seems to be Caterpillar 330 HP vs Cummins 340hp? Dad had great luck with the CAT in his National MH.
Any input would be a help.
Tim

The Monaco has the ISB engine while the Phaeton has the ISC. More torque from the ISC.

Now I'm no expert, but according to the brochures on Monaco's Website the 2005 Knight came with the 330hp ISC.

I would think the Knight and Phaetons should be about even in the way they we're spec'd out and built.

That year of knight came with the RR8R chassis with the 330 HP Cummins ISC engine. This is a good engine. Here is a link to the Brochure.

Hope this might help and give you something to look at. Happy Trails Bert

Other than all the things one should check out on any used coach, there are three potential problems with 2007 to 2011 Tiffin coaches you should be aware of.

1. Roof radius cracks - Starting in 2007 Tiffin began installing one piece roofs with a radius to match up with the side wall. There have been numerous problems with those radius sections developing cracks. You need to visually check those portions of the roof, particularly the DS. There is a fix for this problem, but you need to verify that it has been done as it is could be out of warranty.

2. Rotting wet bay floor - Tiffin was using a partially coated particle board material for the wet bay floors. Over time water can find its way into the particle board, and the rotting begins. Again, there is a fix, but you need to verify that it has been done as it is also could be out of warranty.

3. DS front slide floor rotting - This one isn't as common as the other two, but is something to look for. With the slide out look at the leading edge of the floor at the outside of the front slide. If there is any opening water can wick its way into the floor, eventually rotting it out. If this condition exists it can also be repaired but depending on your location it will likely involve a trip to Red Bay where they completely remove the slide from the coach. There are two locations that I know of, one on the west coast and one in the northeast, that can replace the floor without removing the slide.

Thanks Folks

Jobert, Thanks for the engine info. Guess dealer had it listed wrong in his ad.
Bob, Appreciate the reminder on the "Big 3" Tiffin defects. Very familiar with these issues as I have had my MH twice to the NE repair center for self induced issues and they showed me these repairs in process. Great repair facility if you ever need one.

Don't know about the Tiffin but have run a 2005 knight for 3 years and 26,000 miles. Beyond the normal tires and battery warning, the only issue has been the shocks. Came with Monroe's that were shot at 15,000 miles.

No other chassis problems. Rides and drives well.

X2 for my Knight. It also has the 330 ISC and is working well.

When we were in the same place and looking, I looked at both (admittedly with a Tiffin preference due to prior ownership of one) and figured the Phaeton and Knight were roughly equivalent. In the end, we found a really good price on our Monaco Knight with a few minor issues to be fixed and a motivated seller. The biggest problem it had was the "rivering" on the Goodyear front tires. I think you'd be happy with either one, and have potential problems with either one. Look carefully and get the best deal on a floor plan you like.
