Monaco rumors

At FMCA national convention/rally in MA. No Monacos on display. Rumor has it that Rev group is putting money into American Coach as high end coach. Doesn't look good for Monaco to stay around long-term.

No real surprise here. There is currently only one new Monaco (not Holiday Rambler) coach and that is the Diplomat. That is it, so what is the point when there is the American Line?

I agree. Monaco died several years ago. The name has since been used unsuccessfully. In my estimation, it's time to lay the name to rest.

Although the Monaco line may be dead at least we still have tech support and limited parts support. I hope that does not disappear.

Might be to early write the obituary column. During the Monaco pre-rally in Moultrie this year a VP from the REV Group came to speak and answered questions. Based on his comments I think they're rethinking what names from the Monaco/Holiday lines they plan to use. Case in point was the announcement that they will use the Navigator name as an entry level coach for Holiday Ramble. This did not make for a happy group. Keep in mind that REV paid big money for the Monaco and Holiday names and sub names, not plant and equipment. It wouldn't make much sense to write this off so soon. They recently came out with the old Holiday name that hasn't been seen for a few years-Sceptor. We may see some names from the past but unfortunately under the logo it will still be a Fleetwood.

Like you and most others, I hope Monaco survives if for no other reason than tech support. It's amazing, but through all the ownership changes I still get good support for my 13 year old coach.

Watching Monaco die a death of a thousand cuts, or as one of my kids once said, being pecked to death by a duck, has been a study in slow motion. The death started, like finding a shadow on an X-ray, with the bankruptcy of MMC. The slide started with the high fuel prices that slowed growth in '07-'08. Then the financial meld down culminated with the early '09 bankruptcy.

The asset purchase by Navistar was the next insult. They installed a CEO that was the godfather of the Ford F-150 and he had ideas about quality control that sounded good, but after such mis-steps as dropping in Navistar Max Force engines and building the Dynasty on a non semi monocoque chassis, their financial condition forced the sale to ASV.

The killing cut was the scrapping of the Roadmaster chassis. That was the one piece that really set the Monaco line apart from all the others which were being built on Freightliners & Spartans. The Roadmaster line of chassis could have been up dated but wasn't.

Mike Snell was the last old MMC management guy who had a link to the old and new. When he left in early '16, the dirt was tamped down on the grave of Monaco. There is no longer a President of Monaco/HR. Jim Jacobs is the hatchet man installed at the top of REV RV. It was pretty clear to me, when I saw the Navigator at the Tampa Super Show that the most we legacy owners could hope for was continued Tech Support. The sad thing is that a Navigator twin of the Dynasty was introduced at the HR 419 meeting back in the spring. I'm guessing that that was the only one build.

We purchased a 2016 Diplomat in February and have been very happy with our coach. We did extensive research before purchasing the Diplomat. Comparing standard features, chassis, engine, etc, the Diplomat was about $100k less compared to competition with similar specs. We purchased ours from Motor Home Specialists in Alvaredo Texas, and I can tell you that they can't keep them in stock. By my non-scientific observation, I cannot imagine why they would want to kill this line up, given it is selling very well.

Well Put Craig, the while the New Monaco is not the old Monaco, like you I think the new Diplomats are a very nice coach for the money. If we we're looking to replace ours they would definitely be in the running.

Unfortunately in the transition's they have been through, they have lost some of the qualities that have made them stand out from the rest.

That said the new Monaco is still a really nice coach.

You are right Craig. The Diplomat I saw at the Tampa Super Show was very well done. What you are seeing in this thread is the carping of some old legacy Monaco guys playing "I remember when".

Yes, "we all remember when" Monaco's Roadmaster chassis was as good as you could get at the price point. My Exec sold in 2001 for just under $400k. In today's dollars that would be close to $600k.
Dumping this chassis and the Cummins engine along with it heavily damaged Monaco.
I will say that the new Diplomat is loaded with high-end stuff and it looks gorgeous. The galley layout with the sink facing forward is a winner, according to my partner.
Monaco has had a tough time selling them and negative salesman talk at previous Monaco dealers isn't helping. (I know of two, both in Florida...and one of them is a Monaco dealer.)
Nice deals have been made on the Diplomat, including huge rebates from Monaco of $25k.
I think all of us would like to hear from new Dip owners as to how the new coach preforms. It would be particularly nice to know what the chassis feels like from owners of older Monaco's that were traded for the new Dip.

It's going to be interesting to see what brands stay . Right now REV has 3 exact floorplans in 3 lines:
Monaco Diplomat 43S
Holiday Rambler Scepter 43SF
AC Revolution 42S

I don't think they can support these redundancies. Something's gotta give.

I did meet a 2016 Dip owner at a campground in Indiana. He was very happy with it overall and he said he had about 4000 miles on it.
At the 419 rally they did say that they have plans for where everything was to be positioned and I gathered that it was their long range view. Monaco was definitely in them. I also remember there being a comment from management on how some of the name trademarks (Imperial is one) were lost by Navistar and that REV did not want to lose any others.
I would be willing to bet that if the economy were to get running again, this would accelerate things.
The Roadmaster chassis would be a real plus if it were to ever come back.
