Monaco Cayman warning light on.

My wife and I purchased this motorhome in November 2016. The first trip was 250 miles with no problems. The second trip 150 miles with warning light on the whole way. Unit is 2002 Monoco caymon with ISB 5.9 cummins. I have changed both fuel filters, did not change-light still on. I also checked all fluid levels all ok. Does this light set a fault code and can I retrieve it myself?

warning light

Hi I have a cummins 6.7 and the warning light came on it was the egr valve stuck open not a big deal it is part of the exhaust emission system. they told me ok to drive back to oregon from az. easy fix just not a cheap part. a dealer or repair shop can read the code for you. good luck

Which warning light is on? I've had the check engine light come on twice on my 2003 Cayman in 14 years. 1st time it was a problem with the EGR valve. 2nd time, just recently, the turbo speed sensor was bad. But to answer your question, yes, with the light on, there could be a problem code stored in the ECM. If you have the Cummins diagnostic software and hardware you can get the code. If not any Cummins repair shop should be able to diagnose the problem.

If it's the EGR valve it will blow heavy black smoke out the exhaust on acceleration and clear up as you get up to speed. There are several sensors on the engine that can trigger a check engine light also. Even though your fluid levels may be topped off properly, one of the fluid level sensors could be bad. One of the most common is the coolant level sensor. The probe end can get corroded in the reservoir tank or the wiring for the sensor can get damaged or corroded also.

That warning light is for an out of range condition for the engine protection circuits according to the manual. I would not continue to drive it until you get can get the cause of the light checked out. Continued driving could cause damage to the engine. I've never had that light come on, so I can't be of much more help. Wish you luck in getting it figured out, hoping it's nothing serious.

we live about 80 miles from nearest repair facility. If I knew if the monoco engine platform such as J1939 I would buy a code reader to check it before driving it. I am a retired Chrysler tech. and can fix a lot of it myself. At least I could determine if it was safe to drive. Any ideas? Anybody.

keeney, you might look into purchasing a ScanGage D engine monitoring unit to see if it will give you a code. Just be aware that on our engine/trans setup the ScanGage does not read as many parameters as it does on larger engine/trans combo's. Also the codes the ScanGage provides are different from the Cummins codes listed ISB fault codes list. But you can get the Cummins equivalents from ScanGage. You can purchase one at most auto parts stores, Amazon; etc. If you don't have the fault code list you can google it.

I had the turbo speed sensing unit go bad and had it replaced at a Cummins shop. It can also cause your engine to go a short distance and STOP. I have a Scangauge D, but I never figured out the codes. Now I will google the Cummins equivalent. Thanks guys...

Your welcome Sanford. Hope it helps. I too had the turbo speed sensor go bad. It was causing an intermittent check engine light on my ISB300. Tech said it hadn't gone completely out, but when it did, it would either derate the engine or cause it to shut down. I don't think either would be good.

Well fellow RVers I took my monoco to an repair shop, 9:30 am appointment , 4:00 pm that afternoon they said my Ambiant air pressure sensor was bad. Diag. 155.00 dollars. they did not have one and would have to order it at a cost of160dollars and another 150 dollars to install. I have not made up my mind yet. I looked every where for the sensor cannot find. Any clues anyone?
