I often see poseters being told to check the price of a potential unit with NADA. All should be aware that the NADA on the web bears no resemblance to the one used by the dealers. The web NADA is simply the factory new price less an annual depreciation. It is hwever a place to start. When you take a unit to a dealer to be appraised they do not add in any options. They use the base price. Also I was told by 2 dealers that in the present sick market place they will take 20% or more off the NADA wholesale for your trade. Buyer beware!!

here's my opinion.
the ownership of a motor home can be enjoyed most by those who realize the resale value of their bright shiny new coach the day they buy it.... anyone interested in the "real" resale value of their coach should watch similar coaches on ebay for about a month... during this time period you can sort of get a "feel" for the vale of similar coaches that you're interested in buying...
forget NADA, forget 20% off of NADA the current value of your motor home is the price someone will pay you for it.... And today new or used motor homes have very little value in the resale markets.... that didn't stop my wife and i from buying our new coach, we don't foresee reselling it in the near future... many if not most motorhomes on ebay are never sold because the reserve prices by the sellers are unrealistic for our current market conditions...

my advice is enjoy your motor home, but don't consider it an investment or a liquid asset in any way... trading and reselling can be very costly and painful....

Hi Majeasy,
Well said. I lost a little sleep over it about a week after we bought our Cheetah when the sparkle in our eyes started to where off. But we bought it and we love the lifestyle. Fulltiming is definately a lifestyle change and we really wanted a larger diesel coach to do it in. We knew the implications on the finances when we went in to it with eyes wide open. I still try not to think of it as far as being a smart financial move because IT'S NOT!!!!! But we're young and stupid and we're glad to be doing this while we can because seeing the good ole U.S. of A. is PRICELESS. We can still buy a house somewhere when we settle down a bit later when we find somewhere that suits us and we're done traveling. But not anytime soon.

Happy trails and congratulations on your beautiful new tag axle Cheetah!!

I agree with you 125%. An item is only worth what a buyer will pay. The real price is not set by the seller. It is the buyer who determines the final price. We just bought our 08 Dynasty and I could care less what it is worth. We are not selling and just want to enjoy the good life. I only posted the above information as many people think they can get almost their original price for say a 2 year old unit. This not only never happens it will certainly not happen in today's weak market. I think a lot of people need a reality check on the state of the MH industry. In a sense it has come to almost a standstill. But the worst is yet to come.

The dealers will use two different price books depending if you are buying or trading. They will use the higher $$$ one to show you the great deal you are getting on the newer one and fish out the lower $$$ listing fro the one you are trading.

For the most part, the retail values in the NADA guide are way over inflated. In real life a used RV will sell closer to the LOW RETAIL with no options added in.

But it all boils down to what a real buyer with cash or credit is willing to pay for an RV.

With the state of the economy and poor RV sales, I would low ball any offer on an RV. If you can normally get 25% off MSRP on new, I'd go in at 35 to 40% and see if you can get there. For used, I'd go about 15 to 20% under low retail. All they do is to tell you no-deal.

Problem is they are way too many folks with used units that are upside down on the note and they want to believe the high retail is what they can get.

Fine, tell the dealer that if he doesn't want to pay for your options then you'll pass on his. As bad as the market is right now, if you can pass the credit requirements you can get an outstanding deal on a MH. Just remember that you HAVE to take control of the selling process and know what you are trading and/or buying.

This Post is right up my alley after today, OK I've got a O3 HR Vacationer, 15000 miles in great shape, I'm thinking about upgrading and have been looking at the 37PDQ Cayman XL. So I'm going thur the process and last year the book on my coach was between 78 and 85. This guy come in at between 53 and 69 hmmm big drop in one year. The Base on the Cayman is 177,522 with the options it 192346. Then he says he'll give me 76 for the vacationer with out dropping the MSRP, I get up and start to leave, he says hold on I can give you 80 and 3 grand in rebates. I say what is the terms, standard 20 years at 7.5, I say I gotta go. I'll do some more research on the web but I think he needs to stop working from the MSRP and get down where I want to be.

Any sugestions on how to make the next move or should I wait them out?

I love to hear from some Cayman owners and get some feed back on the coach.

Thanks

Al

Al,
Here are a couple of dealers that have one if you want to have something to compare prices.
DeMartini shows a new 08(stock# 9052) and a used 08(stock# 8060). According to their site the used only has 7000mi and is listed for 138,900.

Crossroads in MA is somewhat local but theirs is the HR Neptune rather than the Cayman.

I've only had mine since the end of April so I can't really give you any feedback.

I'm just up Rt 16 from you, so I assume you were looking at the one at Profile.

you were right on, when you said you needed to get the guy away from MSRP... i'm not suggesting you buy your new RV from this company but i am suggesting you use their prices as leverage to get the guy off of MSRP... http://www.mhsrv.com/
i used these guys to sell my old motorhome, i paid them a 5% commission for listing it on their web site and selling it for me.... then i bought my new coach from them... saved about 30% off of MSRP....

I guess I need to be more aggressive with the dealers. I have been looking across the web and have checked with many dealers on their "orphan" units. Despite these units being upward of three years old the dealers are still trying to make top dollar off them. I understand they don't want a loss, but these things are albatrosses.

Since I keep reading one should expect 25 to 30% straight off MSRP, how about a list of dealers who are willing to sell at that price. I know probably not suppose to name names, but come on.

If the manus and dealers want to survive this "whatever" then they will have to try and move more units at a little less profit per unit to keep going.

I'll being joining you all soon on the road as soon as I find that unit. I know it exists. My rosy glasses told me so.

If you are in the market for a new unit just be patient. The industry is very close to a state of collapse. May sales were down 58%. I suspect that June will be worse. Rumours have Chrysler ready for bankruptcy. Oil is over $142. Some dealres will not survive. I bet at least one , maybe more, mfr. will close. By late summer you should be able to get the deal you want.

these guys are great!!! family owned, and no haggle pricing you know up-front what you have to pay.... discount off of MSRP is listed... currently the discount is not listed on all motorhomes.... a phone call to them is needed for a list of the different discounts per manufacturer..
