I was just wondering about finding a small nail on the outside edge of my tire. It is not on the side wall but on the top. How do they fix this? If it was a car tire they would pull the nail out and put a plug into it. But my tire is not losing air, but we getting ready to do a trip to California so am not sure what to do. Are the tires on out coaches tougher than ordinary tires? Should I be concerned about this? It looks like a finishing nail to me with the small head...
Thx
Ted

Don't plug it, have the tire pulled and patched from the inside.

Have the nail removed. If the nail did not go all the way through no further repairs will be needed. If the nail penetrated through the outside edge of the tread near the sidewall it will not be repairable. A patch on the outside edge of the tread will flex too much making the repair unsafe. Never plug a tire except in extreme emergency, then have the tire properly repaired or replaced.

Agree with other posts, Remove the item from the tire. If it does not leak all is good. By not removing the item it will work deeper into the tire and will leak at some point.
If it leaks a patch will need to be vulcanized on the inside of the tire at least.
Dick.

Don't want to sound like a WA but be sure to pull it where you are having it fixed just in case there is a puncture completely through...much easier for tire shop to change it.

That is the only allowable repair for a Michelin tire, no plugs, just patch on inside. Besides it allows them to inspect for broken cords. If in the sidewall it's not repairable.

I have had to use a drill with a 1/4 inch bit and use the black gooy stringy plug. Done this many times and many miles with nary a problem! Heck of alot cheaper and safer than any glue patch that gets hot! Just my opinnion guys! Works for me! You have to drill the hole or you cant get the plug in! allegro5

If it is in the tread your options are to pull and plug or dismount the tire, pull and patch.
If the nail is short enough, just pull
If it's in the side wall, and long enough then your options are to replace, or replace. (new or used)
