I'm traveling in Nova Scotia and having brake troubles with 1988
Monaco on a Roadstar chasis. Can't find what the master cylinder is. Numbers don't mean anything to Monaco (Navstar). Replaced O-rings and almost all other parts in entire braking system. Pedal still goes slowly to the bottom.
Brakes work fine, pedal just won't hold up where it should.
I think there must fluid seeping through master.

Anyone know where I can get one?

Bob

We're living in coach behind shop for now hoping for the best. Have a lot of heads and hands working on it but hoping Monaco community might be able to help.

I hope your not relying on one place or one guy from one repair shop or parts store to find it. The numbers on the cylinder are most likely casting numbers and can at best lead you to the manufacture of the cylinder, granted that all castings can be processed differently, it's a place to start. Post some pictures and list some of the numbers that you can see and the model of your RV and we can better help you.

No pics as it's back on rig. I'm in a professional shop with experienced people. Thanks for concern.
It's a 1988 Monaco 36RQ DP with 5.9 Cummins.
The nos. on masters cylinder are 2326
then on the backside, against the frame, 6267A or it might be a 4, below that, 61?3
That's the best I do for nos. without taking it off again.
The bolt pattern is a 4 bolt 4 3/4" x 2 3/4" C to C. The longer being the vertical. Has 2" bore.

A1 Cardone, is a rebuilder that has two master cylinders with the number 102326, 132326 but are far from a 2" bore size, could this bore size be wrong?

Thank you all,
Final solution; 50mm master cylinder c/w booster from 95 Top Kick. It's a bit bigger and mounting holes needed to be reamed out a little otherwise all matches up. So this particular Monaco has GM braking system.

We are back on the road!

Nothing but good to say about West Nova Indrustries in Yarmouth Nova Scotia. Let us plug-in and gave us a real break on the labour. A real good bunch of folks!!

Bob and Lynda now happily camped in Lunenburg NS

Bob, I realize your post is over a year old and you may not be keeping up-to-date with current iRV2 happenings, but was curious what particular Monaco model you have.

I too have a 1988 Monaco 230hp turbocharged diesel, 36', which we believe is a Crown Royale Roadmaster. It only has 49K miles on it and is in nice shape, Alcoa 22.5 alum wheels, etc.

I don't see many postings on iRV2 for the older Monaco's, thus my reason for attempting to make contact with you. Would like to share info on our coaches, your experiences, frustations, etc.

John

Hi, ours is a 89 plain Monaco. Aside from master cyl. the only other real problem we've had was the hydraulic fan came off the shaft and took the rad. out! The pump for said fan also drips although it's been rebuilt twice. Replaced steering box, found new one for $500.00 on suppliers shelf, got lucky on that one! Hot water tank got a leak and I replaced that last winter. Some mysterious electrical happening here and there, but overall pretty happy with coach.

Bob... Have you had to replace the front shock absorbers yet? I can't seem to find replacements at any of the autoparts stores. The ones on this 36' Monaco were made by "4-Way"... they're yellow with a blue colored overload spring toward the top, pretty hefty looking. Stamped into the metal near the top of the lower portion of the shock, just below where the chrome cylinder extends, is a number "640198" but some have said that's an engineering number and not a part number. Nobody around here can match that with any interchangeable shocks from Monroe or Bilstein.
Help!

John

John, Funny you should ask... just went through a time with front shocks.

We were in Campbell River and I crawled under rig to check master cylinder fluid level. I noticed a hole on top of leaf-spring that looked like it should be filled. Looked at other side and it was the same. Then I noticed that the shocks weren't attached at the bottom! they were just laying back at what looked like the proper angle and resting on the edge of the spring shackles! I thought the shocks were rather weak, well I guess!!

I replaced the missing bolts with 1/2 x 6" grade 8 bolts and flat washers for spacers. That's @ 500 miles ago. Much better ride

The shocks that are on there are Air Monroe. I'll take a look tomorrow and check the #'s The shock guy I talked to @ it said the bolts broke because the shocks are either too short or too long so I'm not sure if these would be any good for you or not. I'll be keeping a close eye on them from now on.

Bob

John, Here's no's from the shocks: Monroe Gas Magnum 60
66858 P179B

Still can't figure why bolts were gone? Replacements are double nutted and all looks good.

Hey Bob, thanks for that info! I'll check them out at Schaub Ellison Tire or one of the NAPA shops and see if they have them. I'll take my old "4-Way" shock too and see how close they compare.

Yeah, the length could've been a culprit on yours. How long ago did you replace these, or were they already on the coach when you got it?

I was talking with the folks at one of the local RV repair shops, and he recommended Koni shocks, but ouch... he quoted me $189 per shock, so I told the guy, hey, this rig doesn't have any air bags that I know of and the GVWR is only 21,000... not 45,000 like on a Monaco Signature!!!

I see yours is a 1989 Monaco. What's the engine and horsepower? Ours is also a 36' and a year older, and as far as I can determine it's one of the Crown Royale Series with a Roadmaster R-600 chassis. The Cummins ID plate on the engine says it's a 5.9 Liter, 180HP, and a model 6BTA-A. However, it has a Holset Turbocharger on it, so I'm presuming that must boost it to 230HP, because for the 1988 model year NADA listings there are only two 36' Roadmaster Diesel models, one is 205hp and the other is 230hp. But who knows? And the trouble is Monaco doesn't even know when you call them up. They don't know anything about these 'older' rigs!

Does yours have the three-way RVA hydraulic jacks?

And what about the transmission? The shifter on ours has 1, 2, 3 and "D"... and of course, "R", plus there's an add-on Gear-Vendors Under/Overdrive set-up that I haven't been able to get to work yet. It has a footswitch, which at first I thought was the headlight Hi-beam switch, but the hi-beam switch is mounted on the steering column, so maybe the footswitch isn't working right or there's a wire busted off, need to troubleshoot that. Anyway, I think this Gear-Vendors gizzmo adds one or two more speeds. I don't have a manual for it. I know it was a rather expensive add-on, like $3400 just for the unit that also includes a hydraulic brake on the drive-shaft. Don't have any idea what the installation costs would be.

Let me know how this compares to your set-up Bob.

Be careful out there...

John
