They are cheap and simple to change. Just make sure you use the correct ports and plug the ones that need them. Take care to leave the open ones open. They usually come with a bag of more plugs them you need.

Plugged the unloader line and again builds to 40psi. Now there is more air out the purge hole on the bottom of the dryer. Any thoughts??

The purge valve on the dryer is not fully closing for some reason. Possible that changing the filter & wiping out the filter base might clear it. Possible that a new dryer is in your future. Some brands of dryers have rebuild kits and some do not.

That purge port should be closed until the governor sends a signal to it. It the line is off it, it can't get a signal.
Take it off and clean it, if you feel comfortable, othewise replace it.
One more thing, if it has threads in it, like some do, plug it, start it up and watch the pressure.

It does not have threads but I can make up a plug to seal it off. Would this be OK?

For a test. It may blow out, but if it gets well over 40 psi, the compressor checks out ok.

Did the test. Air now was rushing around purge valve cap. Thought I would remove the dryer (20 years old and should have a new one anyway) and check further. Removed the valve and found pieces of the seal in the bottom.
Looks like a new dryer is in order. Here's the million dollar question ,,,, what's everyone's choice on the better dryer??
AND should I go any further on this old air system or is it just a replace as needed case scenario,,,???

This looks like a Haldex Dryer.

Although I can't find any name or numbers on this old dryer it is similar to the new one in the picture I found on the web. I am assuming it is a Haldex.

Joe you have a Haladex pure air plus dryer and it takes kit DQ6026 and consist of a desiccant filter and a inner coalescing filter and the inner filter has ruptured on your dryer, the hair like fiber of the coalescing filter has contaminated the body of the dryer and caused the unloaded to hang open you will need a new dryer. The cause of this is usually from not servicing the dryer every couple yrs. the kit for the pure air plus is just to service it is over $120 and that is why most owners has removed the pure air plus and went to a Meritor Wabco R 955205 dryer that takes a Desiccant cartage R950011 at less than $40. Your dryer should be located on the driver side over the Allison.
There is another thread on this problem on this forum about 1 week old.

Just finished installing a Bendix AD9 Air Dryer and everything works perfect. I did take the advice here and set the cut out air pressure to 120psi. Not sure why this coach had a cut out at 105psi since new but it seems from all information that it should be 120psi. Thanks to all for your help!!
