Darn my Norcold four door fridge has a safety recall- Norcold, Inc. has recalled several models of its RV refrigerator units for a safety enhancement to prevent an unsafe elevation in the temperature of the cooling unit should the unit fail in operation. This enhancement seeks to minimize the risk of injury or death due to fire. Learn more.
Norcold, Inc. Product Recalls – Call 1-800-767-9101
The Norcold, Inc. refrigerators listed below have been recalled.
It is important to implement this safety enhancement to prevent an unsafe elevation in the temperature of the cooling unit should the unit fail in operation. This enhancement seeks to minimize the risk of injury or death due to fire.
Norcold Inc. has decided to recall certain 1200, 1201, 1210 and 1211 model gas/electric refrigerators with serial numbers from 315525 to 13088811, non consecutively. The refrigerator's model and serieal number are located inside the fresh food compartment. These refrigerators may have cooling units with a cooling unit serial number between 700000 to 13085759. This is a new recall campaign to include all 1200, 1201, 1210 and 1211 models.
Even if your refrigerator was repaired as part of a previous recall, it is necessary to have it repaired again to minimize the risk of injury or death due to fire. {More}
If you have one of these refrigerator models, use the following procedure:
1. Identify and write down the refrigerator model. If it is a Norcold 1200, 1201, 1210 and 1211 model, go to step 2.
2. Identify and write down the refrigerator serial number. If the serial number falls in the range of 315525 and 13088811, go to step 3.
3. Identify and write down the cooling unit serial number. If the serial number falls in the range of 700000 and 13085759, go to step 4.
4. Call your dealer immediately.
The installation of the High Temperature Sensor will be at no cost to you.
Owners of recalled refrigerators should NOT operate their refrigerator until it can be professionally repaired by your dealer or a Norcold authorized service center.
If you have one of the recalled refrigerators and you:
Currently reside in the RV, you should immediately:
1. Set the refrigerator controls to "OFF".
2. Unplug the refrigerator through the service vent on the outside of the vehicle.
3. Contact your dealer, a Norcold authorized service center or Norcold's Recall Center at 1-800-767-9101 as soon as possible to get assistance. Do not currently reside in the RV, you should immediately:
1. Set the refrigerator controls to "OFF"
2. Unplug the refrigerator through the service vent on the outside of the vehicle.
3. Disconnect from shore power.
4. Contact your dealer, a Norcold authorized service center or Norcold's Recall Center at 1-800-767-9101 as soon as possible to get assistance.

I just had this done. It is a thermal sensor attached to the chimney that shuts down the fridge if it senses an overheat. It is about a 30 min fix.

The service guy has to call Norcold and get the kit sent to him. It was 3 days shipping from the technician's call.

Randy.....A lot of our refers were left out of the original recalls and repairs. Norcold is just trying to cover the fire (butt) issue by putting this thermal shutdown part in all of the their four door refers.
It's important to know that these are just thermal switches. They remove a power lead from your refer and run it through their switch. If the temperature gets too hot, the unit shuts the refer down and is generally not resettable. They've had some failures with these switches and are on about the 5th generation of the switches.
Initially, I wish I had never had mine done until I looked at the switch and realized you can eliminate it by disconnecting one wire (it's the wire with a female spade end that originally plugged into the back of your refer....they unplug it and plug it into a male plug end on their black box....it's obvious which wire it is if you look). If the black box fails because of the box, you can disconnect it and plug it back into the rear of your refer and your back in operation.
Obviously, if the system shut down because fo overheating, it did it's job. I think you could reconnect the wire and watch the refer for a few hours and know that it shut down due to a failure in the switch (black box) and not an overheat issue.

SRC,
By the number of posts under your name it appears you are new to the forum, and maybe to RV'ing.
I think it would behoove you to visit the Norcold web site by searching on the words "Norcold Recall" without the quotes. Then follow their instructions. There also are Dometic recalls if you have a Dometic.
Welcome to the "bright" side of life.

In my opinion...
Problem is...
This is NOT a fix...
It is only a band-aid...

Getting the recall done may create more problems for you just be aware.
The recall includes all Norcolds 1988 to 2000 2 door and all 1200 series to present.
Norcold recalls and extended recalls.

The downside of not having the recall completed is if and or when your RV catches fire and burns to the ground you wouldn't have any recourse but if you have had the band aid applied at least you could go back to Norcold.
Wayne, SRC is not new to the forum he just apparently only reads this group and until the OP of this thread posted he didn't know about the Norcold problems. Scarey ain't it! There is a lot of great information on this forum just waiting for the taking.

Maybe I should go to every MFG forum and post the recall in case we have others that stay stuck in their only one forum????
Of course thats against the rules isn't it.
