There is a basic issue of what batteries he is starting the genset with and what set he is charging with. Unless he as a single battery bank for both the house and chassis he well may be starting off one and charging the other.

In Mike's case there is a question of what else he was running aside from the generator in his single battery does all setup. Current does not care if it is charging the battery or feeding power to lights or other devices. All the charger knows is that it feeds x amps into the connection. The extra loads are probably why the system gradually died until he upped the current to the 12 VDC system.

It is a single dedicated battery for the generator. Does not run anything else
