I have an Onan 8000 diesel generator model No. 8HDKAK11451J. Spec J.
Changed the oil for the first time yesterday with 354 hours on the gen. The stock filter was a small 185-7444 Onan filter.
Beaudry parts sold me a 122-0833 Onan filter that was much larger than the 185-7444. I measured the "O" ring or seal diameter and they were about the same. I double checked with Beaudry on the Onan filter chart and it says the filter should be the larger one 122-0833. Beaudry parts said this Onan filter selection is most confusing.
I can get the smaller filter that was stock or just go with the bigger one. I like the idea of the bigger one. Maybe there is real reason for the smaller one?

Goggle oil filter cross reference and look it up. You can get a filter at Autozone.

I am just wondering why Onan used a small filter to start with now they change to a larger one. Why didn't they use the large one to start with?
I have checked the filter charts and the 122-0833 (larger) is the one.
I am just checking to be sure. A 1/4" bolt can be a 1/4-20 or a 1/4-28 want to be sure I am compatable for the application.

I just purchased a filter for my Onan 8000 watt generator a couple days ago and the Wix Filter number that replaces the 122-0833 filter was part # WIX 51064. Not sure about other brands of filters.
Is this the first oil ever done on the generator? According to my Onan maintenance schedule the first oil change should be done at 50hrs and there after every 250hrs. They also say annually but unless my hrs are there I'm probably going to do it about every other year.

Onan uses the small oil filter because they require the filter be changed after 50 hours. After the initial change to the larger filter you can go 150 hours (or a year) between changes.

Larry...I have the Onan 8000 and I use the 122-0833. I just changed it the other day. When I replaced mine the first time I ran into the same issue. I called Onan and actually talked to a tech....they usually won't talk to customers, they refer you to a dealer. This was a few years ago and I forgot his reasoning for the different numbers, but told me the 122-0833 was correct. Probably what Norm stated.

I changed mine today and used a Fleetguard LF3996 oil filter. It cross references to the Napa/Wix 51064/1064 and the Onan filter number. It is a little bigger in diameter but about the same length.

Thanks to all very much for your input. I checked the Onan web site under the oil filters section for the 8000 gens. Onan said "the 122-0833 seems to be the wrong size, we this a lot!"
Seems logical they put a small filter on when the next oil change is only 50 hours away.
My Windsor is a 2005 with 28K miles and 354 on the gen. I am a stickler on oil changes and it just appeared the oil filter was the orginal. The drain plug had some thread seal on it that was pretty tight. I use teflon tape on the npt threads when I re-install the drain plug.
Thanks again.
Larry

Fleetman the LF3996 X to a Wix 51334 and I dont know what that fits but dont think it the Onan Diesel.
The Onan 185-7444 X to a fleetguard LF3925 or Wix 51365
The Onan 122-0833 X to a fleetguard LF3591 or Wix 51064 or Donaldson P55-0162 and on the NAPA just delete the 5 on the Wix #

Walt, as I said above, I used an Fleetguard LF3996 on my Onan 8000/Kubota engine generator. The Onan number crossed to the NAPA 1064 in the cross reference listing I was using, that crossed to the Fleetguard number. The gasket and thread sizes are the same as the Onan filter, it fits perfectly, does not leak and does flow oil. I leak check by running the engine till I can feel warm oil in the filter and look and feel for any leaks at the filter mounting base.

Walt, Whatever. The LF3996 fits, it works, it is a good filter, it is readily available for a decent price. What you use is your choice. Case closed!

Larry,
Don't forget the fuel filter, Onan # 149-2513 (available at NAPA #3063), and air filter, Onan # 140-2897 (available at NAPA # 9697).
