What are you using to make your evenings outside as pest free as possible, bug zappers, citronella (sp?), off? What seems to work the best.
Thanks in advance for any info.
Russ

I once used a zapper, still in the RV. They work by attracting bugs, when they try to land on the light they get zapped. I discovered they work best when placed about 50' away from the campsite. Not practical.
What we do use are repellent coils that smolder; downside they do not work with a breeze. They seem to work as well as anything else we tried, and they are easy to store, lightweight, etc.

We use an oscillating fan on low/ medium which seems to help keep flying bugs away.

I have the electric fly swatter from Harbor Freight. Not only are we killing bugs, but we are excercising our upper body at the same time. Another side benifit that has been covered on another thread about Campground Etiquette and people walking through your campsite. I can assure you that after after flailing away with our zappers like people possessed, No one wants to get close to us.

I like this option, but you didn't mention if you are good shots.

I hear bear grease works great but stains the upholstery and is not the best smelling substance.

I take alot of vitamin B and garlic when I camp. If nothing else, it makes me feel safe from vampires. I use DEET sometimes although I hate to put chemicals on skin if I can avoid it. The bugs don't usually bother me that much but some people they like. If you know someone they like let them walk in front of you ....
The biggest pain in the neck for bugs are the deer flies and they are a pain in the neck... the back of the neck to be specific

While I use the torches around my deck, its mainly for the ambiance. What I have found that seems to work well is OFF lanterns with the tea candles and pad. Really like the lanterns.

As said, if you use a bug light, place it away from the site. Better yet, give one to each of your neighbors as a gift

Well I'm a natural-born bug magnet so hubby usually just tries to have me sit next to him. If I'm too ratty we'll get out the citronella candles and the OFF personal fan thing. I also put deet on my clothing (not on my skin) near ankles and wrists. The combo seems to more or less work, depending on levels of bugs. I'm hard to resist you know Nina
