I just purchase a 2008 42' Camelot Monaco coach - I attended a boot camp at the Escapees in Livingston - they suggested purchasing a tester to test the shore power before plugging in - what are most doing? The surge protectors are pretty expensive but so in the coach elecronics - I would like to know if anyone knows of a low cost one. Thanks Clarence

Check your build list and specs on the coach. You probably already have protection built in.

Check build sheet for "Surge guardTM Automatic Transfer Switch" I did not see it on monaco's website for the 2008 Camelot but did see it on the Dynasty as standard equipment. However, did not see it for the Camelot as "optional equipment", so you may have it.

Pay me now or pay me later! Many of us have installed this unit:
EMS-HW50C

It will automatically shut down the shore power if a problem is detected with voltage or grounding. It also has surge protection built in and if you do get hit the MOV's can be changed out by replacing a board.

Clarence,

How much risk are you willing to accept? And how much money are you willing to put up if you do encounter a problem? Think about that before making a decision.

My experience and personal opinion say, don't waste you money on a low cost solution. If you can't afford the $350 to protect the thousands of dollars worth of electronic and other sensitive equipment in your coach, then you need to talk to those people that have been down that road before and have had to fork over thousands to replace the stuff that they accidentally destroyed.

A few of those items are: A/C's, microwave, TV's, inverter/converter, computers, home theater systems. You are looking at thousands just to replace the few I mentioned.

Take a look at Progressive Industries EMS products and compare them to others. I started out with a TRC Surge Guard, then one year later I switched to a Progressive Industries HW-50C unit about the same price but it has total electrical protection except for a direct lightning strike.

Do both a Google and an iRV2.com search on this unit and read about all of the information provided. Then formulate your own opinion. My guess is that you will end up purchasing the Progressive EMS unit.

Oh, by the way, if you don't have a good DVOM, then you need to purchase one of those too. You will need it for more than just for checking shore power pedestals, trust me.

I don't check pedestals anymore, I totally trust my Progressive Industries EMS unit to do that for me.

Ditto.

Checking the power before plugging in is a good idea, but an EMS is on the job constantly. Many power problems occur after you plug in.

I put off buying a Progressive Industries EMC surge protector. I put it off for to long. Ended up with a bad pedestal at a campground and it cost me over $1200.00 to make repairs. I could then get off my lazy butt and get the Progressive unit. Like someone else said, you can pay me now, or pay me later. The Progressive EMC surge protector is the best. Get one before you damage some electronics and have a huge bill to repair the damage. Plus, even if the campground pedestal is the problem, good luck with getting them to pay for your damage.

Clarence,

I doubt there is any built-in surge protector in your rv. As most have said, they own one by Progressive and I do as well. I can vouch that these units are worth the money and last a long time.

You can get the portable one that just plugs in between your coach and the Campground pedestal.
Portable Surge Guard - Product - Camping World

If you are worried about it growing legs and walking off they also sell a lock box to secure it to your power cable.

Though testing before you plug in is a good idea. I can tell you that where I'm parked it would show good power.. However monitoring AFTER you plug in, might well show something different... I've had issues with some electronics (IE: This computer) resetting all day.. I finally corrected it by re-setting the low voltage cut in on my inverter (Which protects these devices) to a slightly higher trip point.

And I'm on a 50 amp site.

Is the "plug in type" equal to the "hard wired" in performance? We were thinking of getting the latter.
