Plastic Dash Panel Rehab

Over the years my Windsor plastic dash panels have literally fallen to pieces. Most of the screw holes have broken out and in a couple of places broken apart. Being unable to purchase replacements I decided to repair and cover the panels in 3M Di-Noc vinyl. Here is the result.

Basically I used epoxy to fill in broken out areas to achieve a flat front side. Then I reinforced the back of screw holes with a #8 fender washer super glued at each location. Next I used fiberglass cloth and epoxy over most of the backside being careful to avoid when snap-in switches are located to prevent too much panel thickness in those areas.
I applied the Di-Noc as 3M advised with a heat gun and exacto blade to trim. I used #10 flat head sheet metal screws painted black with nylon panel washers from Grainger. I went to #10 as the original #8 screws were backing out causing much of the fractures around the screw holes.

DtBt, Wow what a clean job! Just curious as to how you obtained the carbon fiber look.

Nice. Where did you get the Di-Noc and epoxy?

I used black carbon fiber matte 3M DiNoc CA-421. I bought a 24x48" piece from ebay for the side and front. It required a double cut on the front narrow end that is not visible unless you really look for it. I also bought a 12x24 piece for the heater/radio panel. The DiNoc is surprisingly easy to work with.
I used West system epoxy with slow hardener. The epoxy and fiberglass cloth is available at West Marine and many other vendors. The slow hardener has no amine blush that could potentially reduce the NiDoc adherence.

I know a guy that can dip your pieces in a carbon fiber, or camo, or a host of other designs. Anything that is paintable, he can dip. Check out his website. Ebliquidprint.com. Or for that matter, google "hydro printing". Much more durable than paint or a film. Ill post some pics of the dash for my 68 Gto he did later.

Great Job! My dash panels are really looking bad. I will add this project to DW to do list.
