Potty problems

I just bought my first RV. A 1993 Monaco Crown Royal mainly because my wife can't go anywhere without being close to a potty. I've had the thing 3 days and there's an "ode la pue" now. I checked the toilet and found that it holds no water with the flap closed and the odor comes from the holding tank. Is there a way to replace these seals or will I need to replace the entire toilet? Help...

Yes, most all toilet seals can be rebuilt. Just need the brand and model. You may just have...ah...deposits on the seal preventing closure. you might try cleaning around the seal groove first.

Sorry I can't help with the question on the seal, but here's a great product that definitely helps with reducing tank odors.

Camco RV - Cyclone Sewer Vent - 40595 - Vents - Camping World

I put two on our Motorhome over the summer (black and grey tank), and we have ZERO tank odors. It doesn't matter if the tank is full or if we are driving down the road.

So far this is probably the best $40 we have spent on the motorhome

The seals are not difficult to replace. We had the same problem when we bought our Dynasty. I assume that it had sat long enough that the seals had hardened and wouldn't hold water.

Ours is a Sealand toilet, now called Dometic. The seal/gasket kits are available at most RV stores. Camping World probably a good source.

Once the new seal/gasket kits were installed, our toilet has worked flawlessly for the last 4 years.

Before replacing/rebuilding the seal try cleaning it and lubricating it. Once a year or so, we have to clean the hard water scale and bits of paper off the seal and then lubricate with silicone grease. For us, has worked every time.

Cleaning the seals would be my first option. Sometimes deposits will infect the seals or the crevis the seal seats in. I normally take the toilet brush after opening the toilet trap and run it around the seal a few times as well as the crevis. Usually works for ours. As mentioned seal kits are available. Good luck.

You'll eventually want to get seals but, if your seals have a buildup of calcium/lime (which harden them), I've found if you put vinegar in the toilet, it will re-seal. You might have to repeat this process a few times as the vinegar passes by the seal, but it has worked for us on several occasions.

I found seals and ordered them. I'll try your suggestions first, if they work for me, I'll keep the seals on hand for "another time". Thank you all for your input. You're great people.
