Brake Clean is what I would use.

I took the tank off. It turned out that it was not a weld that had failed - it was the actual tank that had developed a crack.
Took it to a specialist welding shop to have it fixed and they proceeded to burn a hole in the tank the size of a quarter. Last thing I said to them before handing over the tank was to make sure that they did not do exactly that, and they looked at me like I was crazy.
They ended up patching the hole up, but would not guarantee either the weld or that it wouldn't leak.
Took it home and made a repair with Quiksteel epoxy putty, and for now it looks like it may be working.
Tank is now back on, and I suppose the next few days will prove if it has worked.

Henrik, If you can, let the epoxy set up over night before re-installing tank and filling with oil. What did the welder use? MIG, TIG or torch.

I did leave it overnight. So far so good.
Not 100% on the welding type, but I believe that they burned my tank with MIG and then made a patch with TIG. I did suggest that they should use brazing (based on others recommendation), but they said "don't worry - we are the experts".

You would have done much better taking the tank to a radiator shop. I didn't know that the metal was that thin, most likely a bad stamping job.

Heinrich,
I live between Folsom and Sacramento off of Highway 50 and have mig, tig, and brazing capability if you need it.

Thanks Roy.
I know now that I should have insisted on brazing repair - live and learn I suppose.
I have just been to check on my epoxy putty repair job. After 24 hours it seems to hold up. Touch wood. Quiksteel epoxy putty is my new best friend.
I have also taken the opportunity to improve the tank support that I made 4 or 5 years ago.

I`m the guilty party that suggested Cliffs Welding in Mesa, AZ -- They have been in business for almost 50 years, & specialize in RV welding & hitch installs -- Anytime you pass by the shop, there are many RV waiting for service -- The shop is in East Mesa, not far from where the Danes are staying at this time -- I`m sure Cliff didn`t do the welding, & decent help is very rare -- William Willard

Make sure that the support keeps the tank secure from both up and down movement.

That 's exactly what I did when I mentioned improving the support.
