Progressive Industries SSP-50X Portable RV Surge Protector
hey hey everyone! been reading and watching youtube vids on these. this seems to be pretty good company with lifetime warranty. my questions is...are surge protectors necessary? are camp sites power that bad? if yes, is this a good one or do i need to spend a couple hundred and have it installed?

To answer your first two questions: YES!!!
I recommend what I have (it's in my signature) or its portable version. It has saved my RV electrical system several times. Cheap insurance, when you think about it b

Yes they are ! First trip last year found that the campground had bad electric service, so luckily the coaches circuit breakers tripped saving any damage from happening. So i ordered this Progressive unit after we got home. Had a dealer install it...

The Progressive Industries HW50C saved me in Anaheim. Bad power hit over the weekend fried the surge protector but didn't harm the coach. FedEx'd to PI on Monday had it back on Wednesday. Great customer service.
Others in the CG weren't so lucky. TVs, microwaves, etc... fried
I wouldn't connect without it...

sounds like everyone agrees...i must have one! only thing i am trying to figure out, do i need the more expensive permanent mounted one or will i be okay with the portable one? i dont mind having to take plug it in and out at each site.

Biggest downside to portable one hanging off the pedestal is theft.. Lock it to the pedestal if you go,that route

very good point! i guess i like to think that all people camping are honest great people!
besides theft, will it still protect the coach like the permanent ones?

You should get the Progressive Industries Electrical Management System, either Hard Wired or Portable. Does far more than the Surge Protector you referenced in your Original Post.

Not the same, not even close to the same.
The one you referenced SSP50X doesn't protect anywhere near what you need. IF you want portable 50 amp that provides the necessary protection you need the PT50C. At a minimum you want over/under, open ground, open neutral protection. The SSP50X misses on protecting you from all of these. The hard wired version HW50C is cheaper than the good portable PT50C Look at the comparison chart to see the differences.
The SSP50X is, imho a waste of money, it offers minimal surge and nothing else.
