Rear AC replacement

Per my signature, I have a 1999 Monaco Signature FSBO 45'. My rear AC just gave up the ghost. The compressor still runs as well as the fan. She's just not putting out any cool air. I pulled the shroud off and noticed some oil around the front of the unit. The shroud looks like the unit is a Penguin II, but I can't 100% confirm this. The previous owner may have just installed the shroud. Again, don't know for sure.

The controls for this unit and the middle unit (Zones 1 and 2) are on the head board/cabinetry on the rear master. Anyone every replaced one of these? Are they 13.5K or 15K BTU units?

Could be low on refrigerant, oil means you have a leak which would cause unit to not cool, might try looking for leak in area with oil. If unit is original to coach 1999, it is time to replace.

I've replaced several AC units on legacy Monaco coaches. Once you hoist the 100 pound unit onto the roof it's not a difficult job as the AC unit is only held on by 4 bolts that you access from inside the bedroom ceiling. Make sure you use a new foam gasket.

The hard part is your 1999 model will have the old 4 button Duo Therm thermostat. Dometic switched to the 5 button around 2002 and has now moved onto the digital Comfort Control Center. The small control board in the AC unit must be matched to the type of thermostat. New AC units will come with a digital control board that is not compatible with your older thermostat.

You will have some choices. You can update the control boards in your other AC units to the new digital boards and install the new Comfort Control thermostat.

You can try to find a control board that will work with your older thermostat and be compatible with your new AC. This may be difficult.
You may be able to find control boards for the 5 button thermostat, but you will have to change the boards in your other AC unit and purchase a new 5 button thermostat (this is the option we chose).

If your other AC is marginal now is the time to replace it also. Both new AC's can be ordered with the new control board. This pushes your decision towards the new Comfort Control Center.

Send a message via ICQ to Ivylog
If you do not replace with a heat pump your old control board can be put in a new unit and still work with your current Tstat.
