Rick,
A very common problem with these units is a bad connection with the RJ-11 phone plug connectors used to communicate information from the control board in the AC unit back to the thermostat. Pull the interior covers off both the front and back units and look for the RJ-11 phone connectors. Unplug them and plug them back in. I believe the rear AC connects to the front AC via a RJ-11 phone cable. That could be the problem. One way to test is to purchase a long RJ-11 phone cable and temporarily connect the front and rear units to test if that fixes the problem. It might just be the RJ-11 connector at one end or the other. These are IDC (insulation displacement connectors) and known to be problematic.
You might also try reseting the thermostat.
Good luck,
Bob
