Last week I replaced my rear tires. After removing the air hose extensions the tire dealer suggested I eliminate them by replacing the inner stem with a 10" long chrome stem and turn the stem on the outer wheel outward. I was glad to get rid of the hoses and the issues they create when cleaning the wheels.
The two holders on the center hubcab are riveted to the cap with two rivets. While at the tire store I cut the rivets off with some side cutters and taped over the holes (on the inside) with a strip of Gorilla tape.
The only thing I was a little concerned about was the length of the inner stem with no support. On some of the Accuride wheels they make a round rubber grommet that inserts into the hole where the stem protrudes and keeps it from moving.
Once home, I was unable to find a grommet that fit the "heart shaped" holes on mine. I decided to make a support that slips over two of the wheel studs and the stem, between the inner an outer wheel. I made the support out of a thin piece of aluminum so it wouldn't affect the rim spacing. I inserted a grommet in the hole that slips over the stem.
This support works great, but requires the removal of the outer dual. I know this is a little exotic, but the posts have been running slow
, so I thought I would post. The removal of the hoses REALLY make it easier to polish the wheels.
View with hoses removed.....fat guy in reflection must be neighbor!
New stem and partial view of support.
It's hard to see, but this is a photo of the cap where the old mounts were removed. They really don't show.
Here is the outer dual valve stem reversed.
Here is the template I made. All holes are center to center and will be the same on most wheels.
Monaco Mama.....have Sacs look at the shine on these wheels. Unlike his, I don't just polish the passenger side where everyone sees them
