Last week I replaced my rear tires. After removing the air hose extensions the tire dealer suggested I eliminate them by replacing the inner stem with a 10" long chrome stem and turn the stem on the outer wheel outward. I was glad to get rid of the hoses and the issues they create when cleaning the wheels.

The two holders on the center hubcab are riveted to the cap with two rivets. While at the tire store I cut the rivets off with some side cutters and taped over the holes (on the inside) with a strip of Gorilla tape.

The only thing I was a little concerned about was the length of the inner stem with no support. On some of the Accuride wheels they make a round rubber grommet that inserts into the hole where the stem protrudes and keeps it from moving.

Once home, I was unable to find a grommet that fit the "heart shaped" holes on mine. I decided to make a support that slips over two of the wheel studs and the stem, between the inner an outer wheel. I made the support out of a thin piece of aluminum so it wouldn't affect the rim spacing. I inserted a grommet in the hole that slips over the stem.

This support works great, but requires the removal of the outer dual. I know this is a little exotic, but the posts have been running slow , so I thought I would post. The removal of the hoses REALLY make it easier to polish the wheels.

View with hoses removed.....fat guy in reflection must be neighbor!

New stem and partial view of support.

It's hard to see, but this is a photo of the cap where the old mounts were removed. They really don't show.

Here is the outer dual valve stem reversed.

Here is the template I made. All holes are center to center and will be the same on most wheels.

Monaco Mama.....have Sacs look at the shine on these wheels. Unlike his, I don't just polish the passenger side where everyone sees them

DiplomatDon... I must say...your neighbor must be your twin!
Nicely explained as always -Can you come up and take care of ours? I may even fly you up if you stay a few weeks and do some of my RV "honey-do's" while SacsTC takes care of the "home projects".

One thing that has SacsTC wondering...do you think it may throw the tire balance off a bit?

BTW DipDon..I laughed at the last line...and just asked SacsTC if he got the other side done!

I'm running the CentraMatic balancers and the piece of aluminum I used would have no effect on the wheels. If high speed balanced, the stem would be on there when the balancing was done. The support I made weighs far less than the hoses that don't get balanced.

Rubber grommets are available from Borg Dually Wheels at Dually Valve and they have different shapes to fit most RV wheels.

Richard....I went through all of those sites and couldn't find the odd shape of mine. I found a round one that fit, but looked ugly. I just like the cleaner look of not having anything there. I know it was a lot of work that most won't do, but I'm REALLY anal.

I totally understand the A factor, been there and done that too many times.

I just wanted to let people know that the grommets were available for the different shape wheels for those individuals that are not as handy.

My wheels require the Heart shape grommets and they came from Dually Valve when I bought the compete package for all of my wheels, stems and grommets.

Is the rotation of the outer rim stem outward something the average owner can do, or does it need to be done with the tire removed?

Richard....That's the one I was looking for, but couldn't find it.

SVTotem.....If I recall, it wouldn't spin around because it hit the sides of the hole. It had to be unbolted/loosened and then spun.
