Replaced main tv, surround sound not working

I replaced the Viewsonic main tv with a Samsung UN28H4500AF. TV works great and tv speaker audio works fine. I connected the RCA jacks from the RCA VCR/DVD AV-1 to the RCA audio out on the tv. I programmed the tv to external speakers and selected AV-1 on the VCR. I can't get any sound to the surround speakers. I've checked and double checked all the settings that I can think of.
Anyone had this issue?

Is your tv/radio switch flipped to tv (if you have one)? I have forgot a couple of times and had no tv surround sound until I remembered to flip it.

Just a thought and an easy thing to check first.

Assuming the TV is set to speakers = external...

I had the identical problem when I installed a new Samsung TV. I switched from RCA cables to Optical and that worked.

Good luck.

Do you still have the RCA VCR/DVD combo installed, or did you replace it with something else.

RCA connectors do not provide surround sound, only stereo. You will need to run a Toslink/optical or HDMI cable from the TV to the receiver to get surround sound. In my case, running optical was the easiest method, and in fact the only way to get surround sound from my TV to the receiver.

Back to the TV / Radio switch , some Monacos have this sw so you can
play the TV or the dash radio thru the same surround sound speakers .
The switching is actually done thru a switching device made by RiverPark , in my
coach it is mounted in the overhead cabinet to the left of driver .
It is cigar box sized and my sw is down and to the right of my radio but some have
found the sw elsewhere .

Does your dash radio play ? If it does then try flipping switches to see if one
will cut off the sound , if you find one it could be the problem .

Things don't seem to operate very well when trying to marry the old technology
to the new stuff but you should be able to get some audio .

I was in Costco recently and saw a small Bose sound bar that sounded amazingly
good .
Most sound bars are to wide to fit under my center mounted tv but this one
is only 21.5 in wide .
A sound bar could be a quick & easy fix for better sound .

Here's a link to it but at Amazon .

I saw the Bose sound bar yesterday at Costco. Nice unit and great sound. I will go to that if I can't get the surround sound to work.

In case you missed it, if you run RCA cables from the TV to the stereo, you only get stereo sound and will not have surround sound. Now, you can replicate the surround sound by selecting one of the Dolby Surround modes on your receiver, but it will not be the Dolby Digital signal sent by the TV station. That might be sufficient for you though. The surround modes do sound pretty decent.

Well I received the Toslink/Optical converter. I installed it and still no audio through the surround sound speakers. Looks like I will upgrade the RCA vcr/dvd receiver to a newer one with HDMI and optical inputs.

If your coach has the original RCA surround sound with the five disc changer, there is no hdmi or optical input for digital sound. There is only the AV (red/black) analog input and the RCA has to be set to Aux for the sound from the TV to work and in my case if I want sound from the RCA at all including just playing cds I have to set the River Park switch to Home Theater instead of Dash Radio.
