I've been wanting to remove the 20" tube TV from the bedroom for a few reasons. One, there is a ton of storage behind it (shorter coach need all the room we can get). Two, the TV was against the back wall and had to swivel out toward the bed, but never had a decent viewing angle. Three, I eliminated the switch box up front and needed another DVD in the back. Finally, it weighed a ton, even though the new space will hold more junk.

I bought a Toshiba 26" with a bulit in DVD player to eliminate the need to install a separate one. I attached photos of the original installation (a little blurry- flash issue) and then the steps for replacing it.

I tried to design something that just removed the TV and used the cabinet door with a flat panel inserted. Closing the street side slide prevented me from doing this. The only other choice was to place the TV in the cabinet and slide it out. The cabinet is 30" deep by 24" tall.

I used two 30" slides I had saved from an old storage box. I was able to weld brackets to them and attached oak for the mounting of the tv. I also used the metal portion of the TV stand to mount it to the oak.

Here is the link to the photos: (I can do the mechanical work, but still get the red X when I try to post photos directly to the post)

Here is a link to all the photos...

Original TV

New TV in the Storage position

New Cabinet closed up

I like how it turned out, but I need to cover/dress up the bolts on the base. We really like the added storage. I custom ordered the cabinet doors from Monaco and were a little pricey $310.00, but I think it would have cost me close to that to have them custom made and not match as well. All the other materials I had on hand with the exception of a couple pieces of wood from Home Depot.

Yeah .......that's my safe for the world to see

John H....The bullet with antenna is a wireless sender so I can change channels on the DirecTv box in the livingroom, from the bedroom.

don, you did a great job on that project! truly a new idea. not to side track this thread but have you looked into using a direct tv rf remote ? we've been using one for over a year now and threw away the repeaters. it works great. you can even take it outside for the exterior tv. just a thought. great job! jim

beaverjim......Thanks for the info.....I'm still running an old D10 DirecTv box in the coach. If there's a good deal at Quartzsite.....I may be upgrading to a new HD satelite and HD box with the rf remote.

The infra red one I'm using in the picture works okay, but doesn't like inverter power.

OK Don, Thanks. I sort of thought it was something like that, John H....

Don, I've changed out my rear tv on my 2007 SFT but when I had direct tv installed the tech said I can only get antenna channels on that tv because of the wiring to the rear tv. I tried to get direct channels but had no luck. Any suggestions ? Thanks Jmyers v2007 Dip SFT, full time since Nov. 2008.

Actually, you have a few options.

1. You can route the video output from the directv receiver to the modulator input of the Winegard video switcher. You would replace whatever source that is plugged into the Winegard
2. Install a manual video switcher into the Winegard modulator which would allow you to switch between multiple sources.
3. Install a second directv receiver in the bedroom Unplug the rear TV RG6 cable on the Winegard and connect it to a Satellite multiswitch. The multiswitch allows multiple Directv receivers to be connected to a single Sat dish. The cable from the Sat dish plugs into the input of the multiswitch and feeds the 2 receivers.

JMyers.....I did buy an HD sat while in Quartzsite and installed it. On the back of the DirecTV receiver I had the option of an HDMI, Component Video and the 3 lead RCA style connections (not sure of the 3 lead connection name). I eliminated my Winegard switchbox completely. I connected the front TV via the HDMI connection to the receiver. I connected the rear Tv by using a 3 lead RCA connection modulator ($20.00). You connect the RCA jacks on the receiver to the modulator and then the rear TV coax to the modulator. This gave HD on the front TV and digital on the rear.

If you're using a straight digital DirecTV receiver, you connect the receiver directly to the switchbox and then the switchbox will operate both TVs.
