Replacing entry door swing arm with gas strut

I purchased a 20" - 20lb strut to replace the metal swing arm on the entry door. I am not sure where to place the 10mm ball mount brackets. Door center, left of center, right of center? Just wondering if someone has done this, or can give me dimensions on a factory installed gas strut entry door. The image below is from a trailer entry door gas strut. Our DP doors are meatier, so I don't know if the pivot points need to be different.

I did this retro a year ago. Worked great, except.... Last month in Yuma we had a big wind storm. I went to open the door and it flew out of my hand so hard it snapped the connectors open. The door went all the way open and hit my left side mirror. The mirror broke off and dangled down held on by just the wires. This is a Ramco mirror that cost $900 new. Lucky for me I was able to send it back for repair for a tune of $125 plus shipping.

I was going to leave the worthless OEM swing arm in place. That should act as a door stop in high winds. it is so loose anyway. I might just grind down the locking dimple just to make sure.

Stick to the OEM...cheaper in the long run.

Why cheaper?

OEM has been tightened 3 times in 6 months. Wind door slams are common causing door alignment problems and God nows what else long term internal damage.

If it doesn't hold up to the wind, well, read the above comment....post a picture of the OEM bracket.

Dan, don't know if this will help since yours is different, but might give you some ideas!

Again speaking from experience, the gas schools will snap off under certain conditions. Mine did. Now, if you can find a school that has a hines joint instead of the clip on type, this would be better. Like this.

Perfect! Thanks Joe. That entry door looks just like mine. It even has the measurements in the pictures.

I think the only difference is that yours does not have the rain gutter above, which is a good thing!

Here are a couple of pictures of my installation and the parts I used. I tried the 15lb gas spring first but the wife complained about being too hard to close the door so I went to the 10lb gas spring.
