IIRC, there are 4 bolts holding the step assy to the coach. Also a bundle of wires. Be careful... it's HEAVY!
I had lots of trouble with mine too, & I've gotten pretty good at doing quick NASCAR-type swapouts of parts. The motor can be sourced from most auto-parts stores as it's a regular electric-window model. I finally got smart and moved the controller to a more-protected spot up under the front cowling - it failed several times due to dirt/salt/crud/etc getting thrown up in it.
Your current problem sounds like either the controller itself, or possibly a wiring issue to it.
Dunno about what make/model might replace your unit, tho, if that's what you're thinking.
