I have an 08 Monarch 35 SFD on the Ford Chassis. The generator is located in the curb side bay immediately behind the rear wheels. The bay does not have a side wall so the road spray, sand etc. is thrown right at the generator. On my previous coach (Bounder) the generator bay was enclosed. Has anyone encountered this issue and how did you solve it? I am considering installing aluminum or heavy plastic panels on the storage bay frame.

Keith

Yet another great well thought out engineering job by some one at the Monaco manufacturing plant that doesn't have a clue as to what really happens after it "looks good on paper". Whoever it was, they probably own a Honda or a Toyota, and play computer games when not working.

Sorry for all of the trouble this has caused you and the hoops that you will have to jump through to fabricate a correction to eliminate the thoughtlessness of some stupid engineer.

Dear Dr,
Don't think that was much help to Keith.

Yup! You're absolutely correct. Although, I get so perturbed at engineer's who really should be pushing fried chicken instead of dreaming up a way to make it all fit. That's why I stuck to fixing motion picture films as a technical director.

In retrospect, the best remedy for Keith is to fabricate an enclosure out of aluminum and fiberglass to protect the generator from the road spray but also keep in mind that generators need to "breathe" and have air circulation for both the air intake for combustion and to exhaust the waste materials not only through the exhaust pipe but the ones that build up in a compartment. You don't want to make it so enclosed that the fumes end up in your coach.

Keith,

My 2000 LaPalma's Generator bay was open also and I had the same problem that you are describing, so I called Monaco and was told that it was open for cooling, (that was there story but I did not believe it) so, I called back and spoke with another tech and got the same story,( I still did not believe it ) so, I called a week later and spoke with another rep and he told me it was open for cooling also.

After thinking about it is the only reason that it should be open. Give em a call and see what they are saying now.

Almost forgot, I fabricated a panel out of aluminum to put behind the wheel and 1/4 of the floor in front. I pop riveted it in and never had a problem with overheating and it kept most of the road grime and sand off of the generator.

My Diplomat Genset is in the front of the MH and slides out and it is also open but it is not behind a wheel.

Good luck

I am not concerned with overheating, I'm not buying the Monaco line on that. The bay is open on three sides so adding a spray deflector should not hurt. Del, thanks for your input. The rig is put away now until April so I have plenty of time to plan the modification and perhaps a nice day to install before we hit the road. The cooling fan blows the air out the bottom of the Onan enclosure so adding a panel on the compartment side should cut down on the road spray and sand.
