A couple of weeks ago SacsTC decided it was time to check the roof again before the rainy season started. He looked around and decided it was time to put some Eternabond tape down - so he started scraping some stuff off. I grabbed the camera and snapped a few photos after he started scraping....

These two photos of only where he was working at the rear of the coach. He also did some patching up near the front of the coach.

Sacs decided to wrap the EternaBond tape over the edge once he started scraping ..so imagine my face when I saw the following when I came home from work...

Luckily - he had plans to paint the tape. Here is how it looks now...

Been there - done that - didn't like it.

It's hard work, but now I hope that the Eternabond tape will last a very very long time. Don't want to do it again any time soon.

Ron - go grab yourself a beer. You have deserved it!

What would have been nice is if the RV manufacturers would have used the eternabond tape or something like it in the building process. Of course I guess they were thinking ahead to future "service calls" @ $100/hr. .

What paint did Sacs use and what did he need to do to the Eternabond to allow paint to stick??? I have a few areas that need attention but, like you, don't want white racing stripes.

Mark...We have paint that we bought at the Auto Paint store. They mixed it per our Diamont paint codes - we also had them put in spray cans. He also put a clear coat over it once he was finished with the matching paint.

As far as the tape...he used the aluminum backed Eternabond..and he is "hoping that it sticks" (ugh-oh ...I don't like the sound of that!!) Does anyone know how often the Eternabond lasts? The paint only has to last as long as the tape...right?

I am sure he will correct my statement in the AM..so watch for the corrected answer when he gets up in the AM!

I suspect he will have to repaint the Eternabond every year or so. The Eternabond will be there for eternity.

..yeah ...Sacs and I were actually joking around - we were wondering how much Eternabond it would take to wrap all the Diplomat!

MM - Could you give us a few more particulars on this. I am in the process of of doing the recaulking thing myself and was wondering whether we were going to look like a zebra going down the road, or if there was some way of painting those stripes.

My first thought was not to do anything to the roof because we will be once again spending time in Quartzsite this winter, but then the wife pointed out that if I do that it will be sure to rain the whole time we are there. Don't want that to happen like it did a few years ago.

Thanks for any help, and did SacsTC do anything additional after scraping to clean the fiberglas prior to applying the tape and caulk?

Hi BaldOldBob

3M general purpose adhesive cleaner will remove the small bits that you are struggling to scrape off.

As I recall this was kindly recommended by Camelot Camper and I have used it myself. It is "potent stuff" so protect your fingers when using it. It works well and you can clean the required areas 100% if you so wish.

Thanks Mama. Great idea on the source for paint. As others have said EternaBond lasts a LONG time and the thick aluminum film should also last a long time. Prepping the aluminum for painting is the key to the paint staying on which I'm sure Sacs did it right. How much did the aluminum coating distort when it was rolled on? Monaco did a pretty sloppy job on our seams and visible from the ground. Painting the eternabond points me in the right direction. Thanks again for the great ideas.

BaldOldBob...Sacs used some a cleaner he got from EternaBond when he ordered the tape. You can see some of the scraping from the rear roof seam in the photo below.
I think the photo was taken from the ladder angle.
