Probably the starting capacitor (quick-start...)
I blew one early last summer. Was a PITA as it was a hot drive home but total repair was about an hour and parts on Amazon were perhaps $20. The smell is probably the start device which typically fails catastrophically when the cap blows.

Naw, my heat pumps work down to 25 degrees. They are rated to 30 but seem just fine a bit below that number.

Update;
Got a chance to get up on the roof today. As suspected, found the start capacitor in 'less than ideal' operating condition. Motor spun freely, so I have to assume the noise heard was the capacitor self destructing!
I'll order a spare since if one went, the other two are possibly close behind!

Please post your source for the parts so I can save them for future reference.

I bought mine on Amazon. Exact factory replacement, too.

Been there done that over the years Ben. I always carry at least on spare Cap. Over the years I average one blown Cap @ year.

Guess I've been lucky. Of the 5 I've owned, This is the first issue I've had with any of them.
Knock on wood !

AFAIK, it is an upgrade to what you have.

I've been RV'ing since 1968 with my own rigs and years before that with my parents. I've never blown a capacitor on any of my rigs. Have blown a couple in the stick house heat pump and one in the garage door opener though.

Mr D, My hat's off to you. Those PTCR's frequently go bad, I would like to camp near you in case some of that rubs off onto my coach.

Not quite clear on this yet.
If you buy this does the ptcr get removed ?? The thing in the picture that is.
I will order the cap from Amazon and put my meter on it. I should be able to tell from that.
I have never had a capacitor go bad yet in 8 years. We have been full timing for 4 years in Florida so the AC's work hard.
I zoomed in on the little black component on the capacitor show in the Amazon link and then did a search. It IS a ptcr device so the one in the AC would need to be removed.
I am going to buy one of the caps and give it a try. I had a PTCR in my supplies that came in handy recently. It cost more that the whole kit on Amazon.

Right, it replaces both the (blown) starting capacitor and the existing (probably also blown...) PTCR. The kit I bought (I got two, just in case!) had everything, including a jumper wire.
