Speedo/Tach Gages
Once again I’m calling upon the immense knowledge of you guys and gals:
The speedometer and tachometer on my 2001 Monaco Dynasty have started showing incorrect readings. It started off with the speedo last month reading much faster than I was moving. And today the tachometer decided to join in. Has anyone ran into these issues? If so, how did you correct it? I know my motorcycles from the 80’s and before had this problem and I’d simply disconnect the cable and spray some WD40 in to loosen it up. Do these coaches also use cables?
Thanks again my friends,
Romr

No cables it's all electronic. What are the readings on your engine monitoring system? The first thing I would check is open up the panel on the dash and make sure all your connections are tight. Pay special attention to the grounds.

Will do
Is the panel you’re referring to the background surrounding the gages? Or is there a separate panel for the connections?

On my Beaver the top of the dash above the gauges comes off giving access to the backside of the gauges.

Hi Romr; As Spdracr39 mentioned in his post, some coaches, like your Dynasty, have, or don't have, a removable panel right above the gauges on top of the dash. My 01 Windsor does not have that panel. Later model years Monaco started installing that access panel on a lot of coaches. In my gen. compartment there is a ground buss bar that is used to ground a lot of electrical equipment in the coach. Has all white wires running to the buss bar. Not 100% sure if the dash grounds are on that buss bar. I would check the bar for loose screws attaching the ground wires to bar. Also since bar is in the gen. compartment it is subject to outside moisture so some corrosion is possible. Hope this info helps!

I loosened the connections on the back of the speedo and sprayed them with Deoxit. Great stuff it fixes inop switches too. Then tighten them up an hour later. My 10% too high on the speedo disappeared. My tach reads low but I haven’t been able to fix that or my ERR1 odometer error created by mastertech shorting my battery.

Guys,
My 01 Dynasty does have a removable panel atop the dashboard. I’ll take a look there. Deoxit is a cleaning spray right?
Thanks again guys

Thinking the question about what the panel reads is related to an Aladdin, do you have that? If not or don't know, The Aladdin is a secondary monitoring system that displays various functions of the coach, RPM, MPH, temp, amps, volts, water level and so on. It is a TV screen with a controller to cycle through the functions.
If you have that, you would compare what it says in addition to the standard instrument panel gauges...
Does your tach and or speedometer change it's error if you turn the headlights on? Basically while driving at say 40, turn the headlights on and off and see if the gauges freak out or whatever.
If so, that could reflect a voltage or ground issue to the gauge cluster.
Maybe not related, not sure, but on some of the older coaches the Alternator plays a part in the engine RPM indication somehow, not sure why or how though.

Yes Deoxit is a spray or a small tube. I use the 100% spray. They have a 5% version too.
You may want to look at the small wires connected to your alternator. I believe the gray one goes to the tach. They can vibrate their little connections in half over the years. Mine did

I haven’t experienced that specific issue. However, the smart wheel isn’t so smart anymore since the air horns blew when I engaged the wipers. And the wipers have engaged when I set the cruise control. I don’t have the Aladdin system, it sounds good. I’d like readings on air pressure in the tires as well.

I will definitely check the alternator wires. Gray going to the tachometer.
Thanks

Well that sounds fun
I am not so sure about how the smart wheel works. Everyone talks about the clock spring.
When I had issues with mine, I found the wires corroded where they plug into the smart wheel controller in the forward run box. I cleaned the connections and it has been good since.
I can only assume it is a Can bus system also but I honestly am not sure about that.
I have also read about people finding bad connections in the left front wheel well. Seems to me there is a small access cover somewhere in there that can have water breach it which leads to corroded connectors and signal loss.
