I've always disliked the looks of my stairs/stairwell, but didn't want to carpet them. The black rubber toe kicks always look dirty. Summit Products makes custom fitted stainless steel toe kicks, but they're very pricey.

I was spurred by the Summit Products booth at the FMCA Rally to finally do something. I went to Home Depot and bought two door toe kicks (8"x34") in brushed nickel which matches my cabinet hardware. I took off 3 1/4" off both ends and 1/2" off of the top. I sawed the ends with a cut off saw, but had to cut the long top with tin snips. All cut ends are either under the step flaps or hidden by the sidewall carpet.

I was very happy with how they dressed up the stairwell. They should be sturdy since they're designed for doors.

Don, you are the man! What a great idea. I am going to do it this weekend. I am thinking about cutting off the screw hole side and attaching them to the rubber with construction adhesive. I have done a boat load of your modifications, and all have added functionallity or just flat added a nice look. Keep them coming.

I also was impressed with the Summit product line but like you had to swallow real hard when seeing the price. You came up with a great idea and it really looks good. Now I'll make the trip to the big box store and get busy on mine. Thanks for the idea.

What a great look, as people enter your coach. As luck would have it, I was going to Home Depot today anyway. Great job!

Army EOD.......On the lower step, I screwed it on at the bottom and then just used the rubber flap screws to hold the top in place. On the top step, since it opens, I had to trim that edge and cut off the holes. I used Contact Cement to hold the top edge on. The largest size plate you can buy is 8"x34". You could flip them so no holes are showing, but you will see them when you lift the step (not a big deal).

I debated flipping them so the holes didn't show, but the plate comes with oval head ss screws and they looked nice when screwed in. I made sure I didn't overtighten them so they didn't bend the plate. This will allow me to easily remove them if they get damaged.
