Regarding your first issue. Did you check all the surround sound settings?
My Pioneer set-up has a ton of them (for a cheap unit) and switches outputs
all kinda ways.
Very confusing.
I had this problem when I updated my entertainment center. My problem was corrected when I changed the surround sound mode to Dolby Pro Logic. So if you have not tried changing the many different modes. I would give that a try.

FWIW my 12 year old Sony died this summer. I even bought a cheap Aux antenna to test the receiver. I pulled the TV to get access to the antenna thinking it had become disconnected. New receiver fixed the problem. Hoodathot?
