Sticky Retractable Steps
2066 Monaco Camelot with coach step retractable step. These steps froze up about halfway extended and would not move. After looking at some previous threads I found that a few taps on the edge of the step with a rubber mallet loosend them and they begin to work as I worked them back and forth. The step manufacter is Coach Step part #7250041 and the bottom where the gear, motor, linkage, etc is exposed to the elements and where very rusty looking. Does anybody have any recommendations as to what to use to lube and protect? I have dry slide and WD40 and was wondering what the best stuff to use considering the expose. I was afraid to use any lube because that would tend to hold dirt from the road. Maybe something different?

After cleaning them well, I'd try graphite. Normally made for locks. It a little messy. Don't use too much.

CRC Powerlube...at NAPA. Every 30 days, after any big run in hard rains. 
It does not attract or hold dirt...be sure you get all moving parts, be careful when working on steps, they can pinch you.

and never get 'under' them either no matter what...
I had a tech almost get crushed from one when he was adjusting the closed sensor...
I warned him just as he crawled under there !
Many of the coach steps are recalled... did u check ?

I was just under the RV yesterday tapping away with a hammer and having my wife open and close the door, as the stairs were extended and wouldn't retract. After about 5 minutes of tapping and opening and closing, the stairs worked. I tapped all over the place - the gear, the motor, the joints, the steps. I can't say which was effective, but it worked. Definitely do this with room for the stairs to retract. This has happened 3 times in the past year. Good luck.

Buy yourself a can of Boshield T9 and lube every joint on the steps at least twice per year. Use the same stuff on all your hinges, locks etc. This beats any spray lube I have ever used. WD40 is among the worst.

X2 on the Boeshield. We lived in a boat for ten years before mutating to land yachting, and I used T9 on everything. Only thing that really worked in the salt water environment.

I had sticking problems with mine too - I found that the link between the gear and the step was over extending - I shortened the link a tiny bit and it has been good to go since - I do lube all the moving parts every couple months.
