Hello Everyone----My brain stopped working---I'm about to install a surge guard 50amp hard wire and see that there is only one connection for input wires. I know that the wires coming from house power goes there but in thinking probably too hard how about the gen or does the treansfer box handle it----so here goes --wires from reel to surge guard then to transfer box ---what protects the generator from high or low output if it has a problem????? Thanks to all that reply back!!!!

I'm normaly wrong and shouldn't answer technical questions. But here goes, The purpose is to protect your expensive electrical items in your coach. and the inverter.transfer switch. This is why most install the surge guard befor the transfer box. If you are also concerned about the generator putting out bad electricity than you should put the surge protector after the transfer box. However, doing this could damage your transer box from shore power but save your electrics. I think the generator has alot of self checks that it would shut down before putting out bad electricity.

SPA48......Jack R is right. Most people trust that the generator will not cause you issues since it's yours and is under your control.

You can buy the short length of wire you'll need for installation at Home Depot. The only difficult part I found during the installation, was tightening down the screws on the new wire connections. You really have to lean on them. Don't forget to get a couple of wire supports to secure the new piece of wire that's added to the wall of the bay.

I put my protection after the transfer switch. I've heard reports of failed voltage regulators causing the generator to put out high voltage. On the other hand, my transfer switch cost is on the order of $100, and all it has that's connected to shore power is a set of relay contacts. There just isn't that much there than can be affected by bad shore power, and if it does, the cost is nominal. But the cost of a blown generator voltage regulator can be much more than the cost of the transfer switch, so I wanted to make sure that was protected.

Different strokes for different folks, but I figure with the transfer switch being one of the least expensive electronics or appliance item in the rig, I wasn't that worried about it.
