Surge protector?
I am still a newbie and have a weird question. I have been reading that you must use a surge protector when plugging into a elect rec at a campsite. Since they come in 30 and 50amp do I need to buy one of each? Depending on what the sites offer you would need both correct? Am I not thinking this through? Thank you!!! Ray

Just get the 50a version and it will protect you on the 30a connection as well.

You did not state what model coach you have but some Monaco coaches had them installed from the factory.

Not true. May be a good idea but it's not a requirement.

If you buy the portable unit, your 30A male to 50A female adapter can connect the 50A surge protector where the pedestal only has a 30A receptacle.

So I've been putting together the list of stuff we will 'need' when we get our coach and found this article What Surge Protector is best for my RV? | Learn To RV

Hate to burst your bubble but my Sig has a surge protector installed from the factory and it is shown on the wiring diagram for the coach.

If you have a 50 amp RV get the 50 amp surge protector. When plugged into 30 amp you can use a converter cord. Even if your protector is hard wired you can use the converter by plugging it into your power cord. Be carefull of surge protectors that come with the RV hard wired in. Many only protect for an electrical surge. You need protection from high and low voltage, reverse polarity and negative ground as well. Most common brands are Progressive and Surge Guard. Both have portable and hard wired versions.

My bubble is not burst: my comment is still intact. Not all RVs have one installed from the factory, and if your RV does not, you are not required to get one to plug your RV into a power pole.

True, but I think it's the lowest cost insurance you can buy. Lots of campgrounds don't maintain their electrical system as they should and many of them don't have qualified electricians to do that. I wouldn't plug my rig in ANYWHERE without the Progressive Industries EMS protector!

And that's why I said in my original comment that it is a good idea. The OP asked if it was required.

Hate to burst your bubble but the surge protector you likely have on your coach is for spikes only, and will probably fail miserably if you encounter low voltage situations that can fry your electronics just as much as spikes can.
If yours is not a Progressive or some similar product, you are not protected as much as you think you are.
