Sweltering/Power Grid Down/ Generator Question

Hello All,

We are currently in an RV park in Southern Saskatchewan Canada. There is an unprecedented heat wave with current temp at 104 F/40C. The power grid has gone done in many towns and cities including this RV park

We are lucky enough to be running on our diesel Onan 5500 genny and staying cool.

Should I have the generator tray out for better cooling of the generator or is it better to stay in?

We have both air conditioners going and are showing 36 amps of usage. Should I knock it down to one air conditioner to prevent over heating the generator?

Any immediate advice would be greatly appreciated!

The generator us designed to be used stowed in its bath. The generator is sized to operate both air conditioners.

If it's been maintained (oil, coolant etc), it will be fine. leave it in. It has it's own cooling system.

Thanks Vince, It's been 45 mins in stowed position with both A/C's and still running. It's unfortunate there is no temp gauge for these generators.

Yep I keep it well maintained and it's ran regularly. I run Rotella 15-40 synthetic blend. Hopefully it keeps chugging along.

Thank you all, most of us Canadians aren't use to this kind of heat and either is our power grid! We never lose power when it's minus 40 though!

Leave it in place. Run it as long as you need it.

It was designed to operate under full load 24/7. I stop mine in the cool of the morning to check the oil. Other than normal maintenance just run it.

Any unit made since about the year 2000 has temperature sensors, oil level sensor, oil pressure sensors, overload protection and what seems like a million other sensors that shut it down if there is a problem.

For reference I have run mine 24 hours at a time in Nevada USA temps 100-115 with no problems.

Stay cool - I never knew Canada had such temperatures. That sound more like Texas USA/

Well the power came back on finally. The genny ran flawlessly with both a/c on full blast. There were a lot of people in camper trailers that looked pretty miserable. We rarely get these kind of temps but it has been a very unusually hot summer.

Sounds like its working like it should. Dont touch it. Service it when you get back on normal AC.
