Tachometer/Alternator Wiring

I have a 1998 Holiday Rambler Imperial. In this MH the tachometer gets a signal from the alternator to determine the engine RPM. When I bought this MH 3 years ago the tachometer was not working but the PO said I really didn't need it since it had an automatic transmission. I now know better so today I decided to determine wether the tack was bad or there was a problem with the wiring. To make a long story short, it's the wiring. To make sure I ran a temporary wire from the alternator directly to the tach and everything worked fine. So here's my question. Do I need to put on my Dick Tracy hat and find the break in the original wire or can I just run a new permanent wire directly connecting the alternator and tach.

Were this mine, I'd probably run a new wire. Finding a short or open (probably open) may be difficult and very time consuming. Get some zip ties, some good wire (18 AWG or even 20 AWG would work just fine) and have fun!

I agree. I'd put in a new wire. It may not be a brake in the wire but a corroded plug in the wire.
I had my brake lights not working. I ran a new wire to get me home.
I bought a wire tracer and found that one of the plug connections had a corroded pin. I cleaned it up and it fixed the original wire. and unhooked the new wire I ran. I left in it in place in case it happened again. That was 3 years ago.
So if you want to take the time to trace the wire, it may be fixable.

Tachometer/Alternator Wiring

Run an extra wire or three while you are doing it. Label them as spares.
