I have 95 Monaco Dynasty. It now has ceramic tile in it. Only 3 tiles are cracked and no grout cracks(not bad for 15 years old and the fine roads we all drive on. I am wanting to take out the tile and the carpet and retile the whole coach including the the entry steps. I am wanting to do this with porcelain or with granite tile. I checked on the Monaco web site and also called them and they told me to lay the tile right on the wood sub floor which is against every rule in tile laying. They said there is no reason for any hardi backer, cement board, etc. I guess it has held up pretty well. Has anyone had any experience with this. Every tile forum I get on tells me something different to do. I want to do it right with as little future problems as possible. Which is the better choice granite or porcelain. The only thing every one agrees on is epoxy or flexible grout and motar.
Thank You for any help
Chris

I have tile in my 2005 Safari Cheetah and 3 of the tiles have cracked. I tried to find replacement tiles without any success. Monaco doesn't have any available either. When it I do replace the flooring, I will probably go with either wood or a laminate product that looks like tile. It is easier to lay and is very durable. You may want to do a search on laminates, they have may that look like porcelain or granite. Here's one just as an example.

Whatever you choose remember to look for a textured finish.A smooth porcelain or granite will be very slippery if the least bit wet.

Jim I dont know about the 05 but the earlier coaches had extra tiles in the coach, the only catch is figuring out where, on our 99 dip I found them in a cabinet that housed the bypass valve for the hot water in the bath room.

Calling Monaco tech support 10 times and you generally get a different answer every time. Our '06 Endeavor has tile in the kitchen and bath and it was laid on top of something that looks like masonite board. The masonite was laid on top of the sub-floor. I don't know why the masonite was used, maybe masonite is more directionally stable than the plywood sub-floor. Because of the plies I always heard the plywood is very stable so maybe the masonite material they used has some thermal and/or moisture properties that the plywood does not have.

Thanks Walt, I looked in every nook and cranny. I am not the first owner and the grout had been repaired in a few places. I assume they used the extras before.
On my MH, when the living room slide comes in or goes out, it flexes the floor on the rear kitchen side and lifts or lowers the loose tiles (2 of them). I think they cracked before and for now I am letting them flex. I know the slide probably needs adjusting, a project when I can spend time on small adjustments and then testing.
Thanks, Again!

I think we were one of the first coaches from Elkhart to get full tile. We have had 3 tile replacement work orders performed for a total of 24 tiles. Eight were replaced due to mars due to a out of alignment slide and 16 due to cracks. I can tell you they are placed on the plywood subfloor. Last replacement was way out of warranty so I busted out the tile and had the tech replace it.

Jim:
On our 05 Navigator I found 4 extra tiles under the large basement slide out. I cound not see it unless I opened the basement door slid out the slide and then went around to the other side of coach, opened the opposite basement door and there was the tiles.

So, in tile/carpet combinations it sounds like the masonite was probably used to raise the tile for a better match up with the carpet.
